Notes: Abstract Diazepam was compared to placebo and phenobarbital sodium in a double-blind study with 472 anxious psychoneurotic patients. Patients were treated in 3 settings — medical clinic, general practice, and private psychiatric practice. The treatment setting was found to be at least as important as the medication in producing a treatment response. Drug effects were pronounced. Compared to phenobarbital patients, diazepam patients more often completed the study, followed prescribed dosage, and reported fewer side reactions. Diazepam patients did not differ from placebo patients in dosage intake or side effects, only in higher completion rate. Population effects indicated clinic patients to drop out and deviate from dosage more than private patients. General practice patients reported the most and private psychiatric patients reported the least side effects. These differences are explained in terms of patient background and behavioral patterns and of a medical as opposed to a psychiatric orientation toward treatment.

Notes: Summary Nervous influences of the pineal complex of the frog, Rana temporaria, exerted upon mesencephalic and diencephalic centers were investigated using morphometric methods after the transection of the nervus or the tractus pinealis. Densities of the cell- and nuclear volumes and of the capillaries were measured by a point-counting method in the dorsal thalamus, the mesencephalic (postthalamic) “central gray”, the habenular ganglion, the optic tectum, the pretectal area, and the subcommissural organ (sco). The morphometric measurements showed: 1. A functional influence of the pineal complex on the sco, the “central gray”, and the pretectal area (see Paul et al., 1971); the frontal organ seems to be primarily related to the sco. 2. The habenular ganglia and the dorsal thalamus belong to a system which is controlled by the pineal complex. 3. The morphological asymmetry of the habenular ganglia (Kemali and Braitenberg, 1970) has an influence on the functional interactions between the pineal complex, the dorsal thalamus, and the “central gray”. The impulses arising in the light-sensitive pineal complex of the frog are conducted to brain regions which are known to integrate olfactory and retinal sensory inputs. The functional significance of the nervous connexion of the frontal organ with the secretory sco is still open to discussion.

Notes: Abstract Under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement of 1978 between the United States and Canada, as amended in 1987, an ecosystem objective with associated indicators for Lake Superior was adopted, and a commitment was made to develop ecosystem objectives and indicators for each of the other Great Lakes. Building upon a history of activities within the International Joint Commission related to the development of ecosystem indicators for Lake Superior and for mesotrophic waters, a binational Ecosystem Objectives Work Group (EOWG) has been established by the U.S. and Canada and charged with developing ecosystem objectives for the Great Lakes, beginning with Lake Ontario. These objectives are primarily biological in nature, in contrast to chemical objectives. The approach of the EOWG is to identify in sequence: (1) broad ecosystem goals, (2) a suite of objectives whose attainment would ensure achievement of the goals, and (3) one or more measurable indicators of progress toward meeting each objective. Societal values are reflected in the goals and objectives following consultation with competing users of ecosystem resources. Identification of appropriate indicators requires the assistance of technical experts. The experience of the EOWG in developing ecosystem objectives for Lake Ontario illustrates the application of this process.

Notes: Various physiological and anatomical studies have suggested that the ciliary epithelium may be under the influence of adrenergic nerve fibers. This study was undertaken in an attempt to characterize the innervation of the ciliary epithelium. Both light and electron microscopy revealed that the ciliary epithelium is only sparsely innervated. In addition, the ciliary epithelium overlies a highly vascular stroma, and the distance between the large vascular channels and the ciliary epithelium is small. These features of the stroma indicate it is structurally suited for a transport function, a fact which supports earlier reports that the elaborate membrane infoldings of the ciliary epithelium are indicative of a transport function. The discrepancy between previous descriptions of the innervation of the ciliary epithelium, demonstrating complex subepithelial plexuses of adrenergic nerve fibers, and the results of the present study may be due to the fact that the fluorescence technique used in previous studies could have labelled some other tissue component in addition to adrenergic nerve fibers. Results with orcein and aldehyde fuchsin stains indicate that the disposition of elastic fibers in the ciliary processes is similar to previous descriptions of adrenergic nerve fibers as determined by fluorescent techniques.

Notes: The number and spatial relations of muscle spindles in the extensor indicis have been determined. Approximately forty spindles lie adjacent to the motor end plate zone dispersed rather equally through this area of the muscle with a modest increase in density among the distally originating fibers. A study of the entire innervation pattern of this muscle has also been completed. These findings have greatly facilitated the isolation of spindles for electron microscopic study and attempts to perform in vivo recording from the sensory nerves of muscle spindles in this laboratory. It is now possible, with the aid of suitable magnification and stimulating and recording devices, to more rapidly find muscle spindles relative to the gross innervation and the easily located motor end plate zone.

Notes: Two series of glass-reinforced diallyl phthalate molding compounds from two different manufacturers were evaluated using a Rheometrics, Inc. Mechanical Spectrometer and a Brabender Torque Rheometer. Comparison of reactivity and minimum viscosity as measured by these two instruments is presented. The Mechanical Spectrometer appears capable of differentiating smaller changes in melt viscosity than does the Brabender Torque Rheometer.
