Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Abstract Inhalation of papain was found to cause emphysema of the lung in dogs and other animals. Following morphological changes, ventilation/perfusion imbalance with arterial hypoxia developed. An increase was observed in lung compliance and in the sensitivity of the sensory receptors of the bronchial system. Pressure in the arteria pulmonalis remained normal until 72 days after the first inhalation of papain. The animals were exposed to papain a total of 5 times over a period of 60 days. We conclude from these studies that emphysema of the lung and airway obstruction are diseases that develop relatively independent of each other. Emphysema of the lung causes only a few changes in lung function that are not very important from the clinical point of view. Airway obstruction is the most important factor for the clinical picture. Glucosteroides could not prevent the morphological and functional changes that followed the inhalation of papain.
