Notes: Abstract The effects of various doses of ethanol on DRL performance was examined in rats under conditions of cued and non-cued DRL tasks and under conditions of low versus high baseline performance criteria. The dose-level at which ethanol produced a significant reduction in number of responses and reinforcements interacted in a complex fashion with level of baseline performance, the cue conditions, and the order of DRL tasks. Generally, performance was impaired at a lower dose level for groups initially trained to a low criterion of DRL performance than for groups later trained to a higher criterion of DRL performance, regardless of cue condition. Further, the dose level at which ethanol impaired performance (as indicated by number of reinforcements obtained) under non-cued DRL conditions was lower than that for the cued DRL conditions, but only on the initial task where baseline DRL performance criterion was lower. Finally, the group with a higher baseline level of responding (i.e., poorer DRL performance) was more vulnerable to the disrupting effects of ethanol on this measure than groups with lower baseline response rates.

Notes: The dielectric properties of partially sulfonated polystyrene films (15% degree of sulfonation) in their dry and slightly wet (4.7% by weight of water content) states were measured over the frequency range between 102 and 105 Hz with temperature as a parameter. Loosely crosslinked (1% divinyl benzene) polystyrene films were synthesized and sulfonated with chlorosulfonic acid to a 15% degree of sulfonation. Films containing more than 15% sulfonation were very brittle. Dielectric constant and loss data of these sulfonic acid films are presented at various temperatures and are correlated in terms of Cole-Cole plots. The dielectric response characteristics of these films find application in the electroformation of sulfonated polymer electrets, which have been shown to possess a high degree of polarizability and are capable of storing large amounts of electric charge.

Notes: Summary The pattern of morphogenesis of the chitinous compound (jointed) setae of the larvae of polychaete Nereis vexillosa Grube was deduced from electron-microscopic analyses of many stages of secretion. Each seta is secreted over a period of three days within an epidermal follicle consisting of several lateral cells and a basal cell (chaetoblast). The configuration of the apical surface of the chaetoblast changes continuously during secretion. Secreted setal material is polymerized into longitudinally oriented setal filaments, probably by enzymes located on the surfaces of microvilli of the chaetoblast. As a result of this process the setae lengthen by basal appositional growth. We infer that the precise size and shape of each complex seta (a characteristic of the species and the age of the worm) is controlled by sequential modulations of the number, size, shape, arrangement and orientation of the microvilli of the chaetoblast. Each seta embodies a cryptic record of the activities of the chaetoblast on which it formed. The genetic and epigenetic mechanisms involved in chaetogenesis are problematic.

Notes: Summary Kölliker's tufts are transient epidermal bristles found on the external surfaces of late embryonic and juvenile octopods. The structure and growth of Kölliker's tuft is remarkably similar to that of polychaete setae. Each tuft is a fasicle of approximately 1500 distally tapered cannular rodlets located in an epidermal follicle composed of several lateral follicular cells and a single basal chaetoblast. The base of the follicle is associated with obliquely striated dermal muscle fibers. Together these elements comprise Kölliker's organ. The rodlets, composed of longitudinally oriented filaments, are separated basally from one another by a layered meshwork of interstitial filaments. Microvilli on the apical concave surface of the scyphate chaetoblast insert into the base of each rodlet. We infer that the tuft elongates by basal appositional growth and that glycoprotein secreted by the follicle cells is organized into filaments by the apical plasmalemma of the chaetoblast. Each microvillus serves as a template for the formation of a rodlet, therefore the number, size, shape, distribution and dynamic activity of the microvilli determine the morphology of the tuft.

Notes: The d.c. electrical conductivity of 14% (by weight) sulfonated polystyrene films was measured as a function of temperature from 20° to 60°C in a 25-micron vacuum. Sulfonated films in the silver, cadmium, and methylene blue sorbed forms were prepared for these electrical measurements. Plots of log specific conductance versus reciprocal temperature gave straight lines with activation energies of 0.49 eV for methylene blue, 0.60 eV for Ag, and 0.98 eV for Cd. Large conductivity ansiotropies were also measured for the sulfonated polystyrene films in the Ag and methylene blue forms. Attempts with Hall-effect measurements to determine the sign and concentration of the charge carriers were unsuccessful. Photoconduction studies were also carried out with Ag-, Cd-, and methylene blue-doped sulfonated polystyrene films in the film lateral direction of highest photocurrent. Rise of photocurrent under d.c. illumination was found to be exponential with time constants of 29, 3.5, and 1.0 sec for Ag-, Cd-, and methylene blue-doped samples. The rise and decay of photocurrent in these films exhibited similar responses. Photocurrent was ohmic up to 400 V and varied linearly with light intensity up to 200 milliwatts.
