Notes: Plasma gonadotrophin levels were measured at frequent intervals in six post-menopausal thyrotoxic women treated with carbimazole. All patients showed an increasing follicle stimulating hormone/luteinizing hormone (FSH/LH) ratio as the thyroid hormone concentrations fell to normal and then into the hypothyroid range. Although the increased FSH/LH ratio was primarily due to a rise of FSH, two patients had a rise of both gonadotrophins. It is suggested that menstrual irregularities occurring in premenopausal women with disorders of thyroid metabolism may be related to similar changes.

Notes: During raspberry (Rubus ideaus L. cv Glen Clova) fruit ripening, endo-β-1,4-glucanase (EGase; EC 3.2.1.4) specific activity (per g fresh weight) increases approximately 15-fold. Highest activity was associated with the surfaces of the receptacles where the weakening abscission zones are located. Immunoblotting using antibodies raised against a bean abscission-EGase (ab.-EGase) identified a single protein of Mr 52 kDa that was present only in ripe fruit and was most prominent in the receptacle. Using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), two 497-bp partial putative EGase clones were obtained from ripe receptacle mRNA (termed RI-EGL1 and 2) which share 53% amino acid identity. The more abundant RI-EGL1 was used to obtain its full length clone from a ripe receptacle cDNA library. The deduced amino acid sequence of RI-EGL1 was similar to other ab.-EGase sequences (ca 67%) and contained the conserved motifs present in all E2-class EGases. Northern analysis revealed that RI-EGL1 expression was limited to ripe-fruit receptacles. Application of the ethylene antagonist 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to green fruits indicated that endogenous ethylene accelerates raspberry abscission and increases both EGase activity and RI-EGL1 expression.

Notes: Genomic restriction fragments isolated from Mycoplasma hyorhinis and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae were shown by DNA hybridization and nucleotide sequence analyses to contain sequences common to these two species, as well as another porcine-derived mycoplasma, Mycoplasma flocculare. Intraspecies hybridization experiments using these fragments as probes indicated that the sequence is highly redundant in several strains of M. hyorhinis, but that there is diversity in the sizes of restriction fragments detected among these strains. In contrast, repetition of the sequence was limited in M. hyopneumoniae and M. flocculare, and no homologies to this repeated element were apparent in mycoplasma species isolated from animal hosts other than the swine. The reiterated sequence may reflect intraspecies genomic diversification in M. hyorhinis and its selective presence in otherwise unrelated species raises the possibility that it has been horizontally transmitted between these organisms.

Notes: Changes in gene expression that occur in the stolon tips of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cv. Record during tuberisation were investigated. Protein extracts from stolon tips at various stages in the tuberisation process were analysed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. A number of quantitative and qualitative changes in polypeptide composition accompanied the very early stages of tuberisation. In vitro translation of RNA extracted from stolon tips also revealed quantitative and qualitative changes associated with tuberisation. Immunoblotting of protein extracts with monoclonal antibodies raised against α- and β-tubulin showed quantitative changes in the relative level of β-tubulin, but not α-tubulin, as the stolon tips tuberised. Changes in the pattern of α-tubulin isotype expression were shown to occur at early stages in the tuberisation process.

Notes: Abstract Historically, computer models have grown in complexity, and consequently have become more difficult to use. At the same time there is a growing need for quick-response methods and techniques for broad-brush policy formulation and decision making. The personal computer and its attendant software offer new means for quantitative sketch planning. This paper illustrates two PC-based applications for quick-response exercises. These involve interactive mapping and data analysis methods for the appraisal and interpretation of transport data, and the development and use of eclectic models for systems analysis and scenario generation. The LAMM and DIAMONDS packages are described, and their use in data analysis is illustrated. The Trends Integrator Procedure (TIP) is used to formulate a simple but versatile model for investigation of developments in an urban retailing system. These packages all run on PC's and offer powerful and adaptive tools for improved transport planning.

Notes: Abstract The dependence of the current efficiency for the oxidation of a white cast iron anode to ferrate(vi) ions in 14 m NaOH was measured in the region of bubble induced convection for the temperature range 10 to 50 °C. Using a white cast iron anode the highest current yield obtained after 3 h of electrolysis was 55% at a current density of 8 mA cm−2 and a temperature of 20°C. The anode was activated by cathodic prepolarization. The iron concentration in low oxidation states contained in the post electrolysis solution increased with temperature over the whole temperature range studied. This concentration was almost 10 times higher than in the case of grey cast iron reported earlier. The dependence of ferrate(vi) current yield on the hydroxide concentration was studied in the range 5 to 16 m. The optimum concentration was found to be 14 m. The quasisteady state anodic polarization curve of white cast iron anode in the transpassive potential region was measured. This shows the start of oxygen evolution occurring at higher potentials compared to grey cast iron.

Notes: Summary V. D. Belousov (1925–88) made numerous contributions to the study of quasigroups. In particular, his lengthy 1966 paper “Balanced identities in quasigroups” [4] contains what has been described as a “very significant” and “remarkable” theorem [11, pp. 68–69]. Remarkable though it was, this theorem provided only a partial answer to the question as to which balanced equations on quasigroups gave rise to group isotopes. Although not specifically addressed in the paper [12], a characterization of the balanced equations in question may be derived from a generalization of Belousov's Theorem due to E. Falconer. The first author explicitly solved the problem in 1979; however his characterization was of a technical nature and depended on machinery developed over three papers [13]. In 1985 Belousov found a characterization which is not only elegant but also lends itself to a simple proof [5]. The purpose of this paper is to provide sufficient background for the non specialist to understand and enjoy what we too would describe as “a remarkable theorem”.
