    Notes: A Laue case X-ray interferometer has been cut from a silicon single crystal. Two of the slices are dislocation-free. The third one contains slippages with about 60 dislocations emitted on two close slip planes during the final stage of crystal growth. The dislocations have been observed directly and their Burgers vector has been determined in X-ray topographs. Moiré patterns caused by the strain field of the slippages have been studied in interferograms made with Cu Kα and Mo Kα radiations. Some methods of evaluation of the strain field are demonstrated.

    Endogenous Growth Substances in Normal and Dwarf Mutants of Cortland and Golden Delicious Apple Shoots (1974)

    Notes: Endogenous growth substances in the shoots of dwarf mutants of Cortland (Cortland 65–6 and Cortland 65–7) and Golden Delicious (Golden Auvil Spur and Yellow Spur) were investigated in relation to dwarfism. The shoots were extracted at three stages of growth, namely: 1) rapid elongation growth, 2) formation of terminal bud, and 3) cessation of cambial growth. The growth substances were partially separated by thin layer chromatography and bioassayed using the Avena first internode and Lepidium seed germination tests.Shoot extracts from the normal Cortland and Golden Delicious plants contained higher levels of auxins at all stages of growth than those from dwarf mutants. Growth-promoting activity was found in two zones on chromatograms developed with isopropanol: ammonia: water (10:1:1 v/v/v):Rf 0.4 to 0.5 and Rf 0.8 to 0.9.The Lepidium seed germination test showed the presence of a highly inhibitory zone between Rf 0.3 and 0.4 in the extracts of dwarf and normal plants. However, the peak of germination inhibition activity was sharp for dwarf mutants and less for extracts of normal growing plants at 3 stages of growth. The inhibitory substance(s) was further purified on TLC plates by successive separations in different solvent systems. Two substances which inhibited the Lepidium seed germination were found, one close to the Rf value of synthetic abscisic acid and the other appeared to be similar to xanthoxin in Rf value, biological activity and UV absorption spectra.

    Influence of Nitrogen Supply on Uptake and Translocation of Strontium and Calcium in Wheat Seedlings (1972)

    Notes: Supplying nitrate to N-depleted wheat seedlings (Triticum vulgare cv. Knox) stimulated the uptake and translocation of both 83Sr and 45Ca. Since the increase in 45Ca accumulation was greater, the 85Sr/45Ca ratio in the plant tissue was decreased. Nitrate had relatively little influence on the amount of the divalent cations and 85Sr/45Ca ratio in the exchangeable fraction on the root surfaces, whereas it greatly increased the uptake into root tissue and translocation to shoots. The increase in percent transported to shoots occurred largely in the period of most rapid nitrate uptake.A split root study indicated that nitrate was ineffective when it was supplied to a different portion of the root system than that exposed to 85Sr and 45Ca. Nevertheless, ammonium and urea also increased the translocation of the two cations, indicating that the effects of nitrate could not entirely be ascribed to a direct effect of the nitrate anion.

    Notes: The campound 3-methyleneoxindole was synthesized and tested in three “biological systems for auxin activity: Root initarion in pea stem currings, extension growth of etiolated pea stem segments and Avena first internodes. In none of the systems was found any effect — positive or negative of methyleneoxindole. It thus seems improbable that the compound participates in the growth regulation of these plants.

    Notes: Summary Nerve fibres, running longitudinally as well as circularly between the core lamellae in the Herbst corpuscle are described. These fibres are morphologically different from the central afferent axon. They are most frequently observed in the outer part of the core, and contain inter alia numerous agranular vesicles measuring approx. 450 Å in diameter, dense core vesicles with a diameter approx. 800 Å and microtubuli (250 Å). Occasional specialized junctions are seen between the nerves and the neighbouring lamellae.
