Notes: Summary Report is given on 223 total hip replacements performed at the Orthopaedic University Hospital Innsbruck in the time between 1968 and November 1st 1972. A systematic follow-up study has been carried out on 171 patients with 178 prostheses. The rating system was evaluated in terms of: functional motility according to Gade, functional activity according to Shepherd in a modified form, degree of pain and the patient's subjective rating. The full evaluation is determined by the worst actual result of these four criterions. The total evaluation shows 23.6% very good, 50.5% good, 18.5% fair and 7.9% poor results. There was a slight improvement in the range of motion up to the 3rd post-operative year, thereafter a tendency of decrease could be observed. Loosening of the prosthesis on two occasions has made reoperation necessary. Superficial infection has occurred in one case, but no deep infection so far. There were severe periarticular ossifications in 9% and to a moderate degree in 6.7%.

Notes: Summary In a 32 kg dog, a large arteriovenous fistula was established by a side-to-side anastomosis between the lower abdominal aorta and the inferior vena cava. 12 months after the operation, the influence of the shunt on the cardiovascular system was studied. The cardiac output was found to be elevated to 6 l/min, so that a normal mean pressure was maintained in the aorta. The shunt flow was 50% of the cardiac output. Clamping of the fistula had the following effects: the cardiac output was reduced by 30%; after an initial oscillation, the aortic mean pressure remained at an elevated level, while dP/dtmax of the left ventricle decreased; 30 to 60 see after clamping, a mechanical pulsus alternans appeared which ceased within a few heart beats when the fistula was reopened. The alternans is interpreted as a functional alteration of the myocardium. Input impedances were determined at 3 points: ascending aorta, and abdominal aorta both proximal and distal to the fistula. From a detailed analysis of these input impedances and of the respective pulse contours, it is concluded that a large positive reflection of the pulse wave occurs in the region of the fistula — the aorta between the heart and this region, however, behaves virtually like a homogeneous tube.

Notes: Summary In an earlier publication, we described a method which permits the determination of a quasi-continuous frequency spectrum of the input inpedance of the arterial system. It is the aim of the preceding paper “Comments on the Extension of Waveshapes” to test the validity for our method. The mode of calculation used for this purpose is not identical with that described in our paper. The principles of the original method and the differences between both modes of calculation are pointed out.

Notes: Summary In vitro the pressure-volume curves of small segments of the rat tail artery containing 75% smooth muscle were determined in the frequency range 0.018–25 Hz. The segments were held at in-situ lengths of about 6 mm. The vascular smooth tone muscle was influenced by treatment with norepinephrine and papaverine. The circumferential stressσ t was changed by varying the mean transmural pressure. The circumferential elastic modulusE t was calculated from values obtained by the static and dynamic pressure-diameter relations. The formula used is valid for thick-walled, longitudinally constrained vessels and is derived in a theoretical paragraph. Results and conclusions: 1. The quasistatic circumferential elastic modulus is 105 dynes/cm2 for the smallest stresses considered and increases to 2×106 dynes/cm2, occuring at maximum stress. These values are smaller by a factor of ten than those measured by other authors on large arteries. 2. There is a linear relationship betweenE t andσ t at each frequency range investigated. The moduli observed after treatment with papaverine aregreater than those observed after excitation of the smooth muscle with norepinephrine, the same stress applying in each case. 3. The dynamic elastic modulusE d (real part ofE t ) and the loss modulusω η w (imaginary part ofE t ) are related toσ t and plotted against frequency.E d /σ t increases slightly with frequency; this quotient is far smaller after treatment with norepinephrine than after the application of papaverine. The expressionω η w /σ t shows the well-known frequency dependence and proves to be independent of the smooth muscle tone. Therefore, when the smooth muscle is activated, the relative contribution of the loss modulus to the circumferential elastic modulus is greater than under conditions of relaxation.

Notes: Abstract The results of an analysis of 16 laboratory records of Torpedo marmorata Risso attacks are presented: when a fish swims near a T. marmorata at rest, the latter jumps and simultaneously immobilizes the prey by its electric organ discharge (EOD). A water stream is used to direct the paralysed prey beneath its disc before swallowing. The attack is made if the prey swims at short distance (≤ 4 cm); height and direction of the jump are related to the position of the prey. The EOD, interrupted during the jump, reappears when the prey moves under the disc of T. marmorata, and ceases before swallowing. The strength of the EOD is sufficient to break the vertebral column of the prey. The possible receptor organs involved in this behaviour are presumed to be lateral line organs and touch detectors: the former to localize the prey before the jump, the latter to detect it under the disc. Evolutionary convergence of the prey capture behaviour of Torpedo, Malapterurus, and Electrophorus is also discussed.

Notes: Summary A number of difficulties inherent in ultrasound Doppler blood flowmetry are discussed. The method is improved by electronic averaging of a series of flow pulses recorded in steady state circulation. This procedure permits to raise the upper frequency limit of the low-pass filter to such an extent that the recordings are suitable for hemodynamic studies.
