Notes: SUMMARY.— A study was carried out to observe the effect of the administration of varying amounts of prednisone, as well as of the antihistamine Incidal, upon the patch test reaction in patients who had previously shown a positive or strongly positive reaction with different substances. A daily dose of 40 mg prednisone given to 12 patientswasfound tosuppressthetest reaction completely in 3 patients and to diminish it in 8; in 1 case there was no change. With a daily dose of 30 mg given to 18 patients, the reaction was suppressed in 4 and diminished in 6 patients; in 8 no difference could be detected. In the 16 patients who were given a daily dose of 20 mg predispose, the test was completely suppressed in only 1, was diminished in 5 patients, and was unchanged in 10. In all of the 10 patients who were given the antihistamine Incidal (mebhydrolin napadisylate) no difference could be seen in the patch test reactions.

Notes: Abstract Hot dry winds (Sharav) produce increased ionisation of the atmosphere, values for positive and negative ions going up from an average of 1, 000 per cm3 to 1, 500. There was almost always a slight preponderance of the positively-charged small ions. This increased air ionisation induces serotonin release in about one-quarter of the population with multiple complaints of a typical serotonin irritation syndrome. In 75% of 129 subjects suffering from serotonin ailments, the treatment with negative air ions (Ionotron) with an output of 3.5 × 105 ions/(cm3 · sec) at 1 m distance produced prophylactic and therapeutic relief when the patients were kept in a room of up to 4 × 4 m size. These results were controlled by serotonin and 5-HIAA urinalysis.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An epistaxis occurring days or months after a head injury may, in rare cases, originate from an infraclinoid aneurysm of the internal carotid artery (IC). The blood reaches the nasopharyngeal space through a traumatically opened sphenoidal sinus, or more rarely through the auditory tube. Preliminary slight bleeding almost always precedes the massive haemorrhage. In addition, the head injury may cause a pre-existing congenital or arteriosclerotic aneurysm of the IC to rupture, or it may be the original cause of the aneurysm. In the case demonstrated here, the traumatic origin of the aneurysm could be demonstrated for the first time by two temporally separated angiograms. A dangerous epistaxis called for the complete exclusion of the abnormality of the vessel on one occasion. The acute difficulty in controlling the massive bleeding confirms warning reports in the literature that simple ligation of the carotid in the neck does not always prevent a lethal second haemorrhage. Consequently, the method of choice is. the combined occlusion of the cervical and the intracranial carotid. If possible, it is preferable to operate in two steps.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurde dieγ-Glutamyl-Transpeptidase Aktivität im 8 Std-Nachturin von 20 Gesunden und 48 Patienten (im Alter von 16–89 Jahren) mit urorenalen Erkrankungen nach G. Szasz [Clin. Chem.15. 124 (1969)] untersucht.
Notes: Summary γ-glutamyl-transpeptidase activity in 8 h night urines from 20 healthy subjects and 48 patients (aged 16–89 years) with uro-renal disease was analysed according toSzasz [Clin. Chem.15, 124 (1969)]. The means for women were 29,0 mU/ml and 6410,7 mU/8 h, for males 27,2 mU/ml and 7423,3 mU/8 h. Acute infections and destructive disease in the uro-renal system resulted in increased activity. In chronic destructive disease and predominantly inactive renal changes due to age, the enzyme activity was significantly reduced.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the problem of minimizing a functionf(x) subject to a constraint φ(x)=0 is considered. Here,f is a scalar,x ann-vector, and φ aq-vector, withq〈n. The use of the augmented penalty function is explored in connection with theordinary gradient algorithm. The augmented penalty functionW(x, λ,k) is defined to be the linear combination of the augmented functionF(x, λ) and the constraint errorP(x), where theq-vector λ is the Lagrange multiplier and the scalark is the penalty constant. The ordinary gradient algorithm is constructed in such a way that the following properties are satisfied in toto or in part: (a) descent property on the augmented penalty function, (b) descent property on the augmented function, (c) descent property on the constraint error, (d) constraint satisfaction on the average, or (e) individual constraint satisfaction. Properties (d) and (e) are employed to first order only. With the above considerations in mind, two classes of algorithms are developed. For algorithms of Class I, the multiplier is determined so that the error in the optimum condition is minimized for givenx; for algorithms of Class II, the multiplier is determined so that the constraint is satisfied to first order. Algorithms of Class I have properties (a), (b), (c) and include Algorithms (I-α) and (I-β). In the former algorithm, the penalty constant is held unchanged for all iterations; in the latter, the penalty constant is updated at each iteration so as to ensure satisfaction of property (d). Algorithms of Class II have properties (a), (c), (e) and include Algorithms (II-α) and (II-β). In the former algorithm, the penalty constant is held unchanged for all iterations; in the latter, the penalty constant is updated at each iteration so as to ensure satisfaction of property (b). Four numerical examples are presented. They show that algorithms of Class II exhibit faster convergence than algorithms of Class I and that algorithms of type (β) exhibit faster convergence than algorithms of type (α). Therefore, Algorithm (II-β) is the best among those analyzed. This is due to the fact that, in Algorithm (II-β), individual constraint satisfaction is enforced and that descent properties hold for the augmented penalty function, the augmented function, and the constraint error.

Notes: Abstract The nine quadratically convergent algorithms for function minimization appearing in Ref. 2 are tested through several numerical examples. A quadratic function and four nonquadratic functions are investigated. For the quadratic function, the results show that, if high-precision arithmetic together with high accuracy in the one-dimensional search is employed, all the algorithms behave identically: they all produce the same sequence of points and they all lead to the minimal point in the same number of iterations (this number is equal at most to the number of variables). For the nonquadratic functions, the results show that some of the algorithms behave identically and, therefore, any one of them can be considered to be representative of the entire class. The effect of different restarting conditions on the convergence characteristics of the algorithms is studied. Proper restarting conditions for faster convergence are given.
