    Notizen: Relationships among orienting responses (ORs), anticipatory responses (ARs), and both unconditioned responses. (UCRs) and the UCR-latency responses which occur on acquisition test trials were examined in an 8 sec CS/UCS skin resistance response (SRR) conditioning schedule, Response characteristics were scored objectively by means of a Linc-8 program based on the rate of change of amplitude, and included response frequency, amplitude, onset and peak latencies.Substantial interaction were observed between AR and UCR characteristics, Negative correlations were obtained between AR and UCR occurrences on reinforced trials, shown to be associated with a long peak latency of the AR. AR/UCR amplitude relationships were also negative, indicating that high amplitude ARs lend to occur with low amplitude UCRs. Results on reinforced trials, however, showed a positive relationship between AR/UCR-latency frequency.

    Notizen: We have synthesized a series of granular Fe-SiO2 solids consisting of Fe metal granules of nanometer sizes embedded in an insulating SiO2 matrix. The ultrafine microstructures, revealed by TEM, are achieved by using a high-rate magnetron sputtering system. The magnetic properties of such solids are determined by the granular size and the metal volume fraction. Below the percolation threshold, isolated single-domain particles having large magnetic coercivity in the blocked state exhibit superparamagnetic relaxation, which has been studied by using SQUID magnetometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Above the percolation threshold, magnetic coercivity drops dramatically and the magnetic properties approach that of pure Fe. The anisotropy energy of the magnetic granules, much larger than that due to magnetocrystalline anisotropy, has been determined.

    Notizen: Metal-insulator-semiconductor capacitors have been fabricated using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition of Si3N4 and SiO2 insulators on La2CuO4 semiconducting single crystals. Auger electron spectroscopy was used to characterize the insulator-semiconductor interface after annealing at several temperatures. Copper segregation and oxygen out-diffusion were observed and the Si3N4-semiconductor interface was found to be more stable than the SiO2-semiconductor one.

    Notizen: Metal-insulator-semiconductor field effect transistors have been fabricated using laser ablation to deposit YBaCuO thin films onto SrTiO3, MgO, LaAlO3, and LaGaO3 substrates. The substrates were used as gate insulators. The conductivity of two films on SrTiO3 could be modulated, while for other samples the conductivity was independent of the gate voltage. The field-effect mobility was extracted and found to be of magnitude comparable to the mobility of metallic YBa2Cu3O7.

    Notizen: SUMMARY.— A study was carried out to observe the effect of the administration of varying amounts of prednisone, as well as of the antihistamine Incidal, upon the patch test reaction in patients who had previously shown a positive or strongly positive reaction with different substances. A daily dose of 40 mg prednisone given to 12 patientswasfound tosuppressthetest reaction completely in 3 patients and to diminish it in 8; in 1 case there was no change. With a daily dose of 30 mg given to 18 patients, the reaction was suppressed in 4 and diminished in 6 patients; in 8 no difference could be detected. In the 16 patients who were given a daily dose of 20 mg predispose, the test was completely suppressed in only 1, was diminished in 5 patients, and was unchanged in 10. In all of the 10 patients who were given the antihistamine Incidal (mebhydrolin napadisylate) no difference could be seen in the patch test reactions.

    Notizen: Background : The administration of proton pump inhibitors intravenously after endoscopic treatment of peptic ulcers significantly reduces the recurrence of bleeding.Aim : To evaluate the incremental cost-effectiveness in Canada of intravenous proton pump inhibitor before endoscopic therapy to patients presenting with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding, compared with endoscopic treatment alone.Methods : From a third-party payer perspective, we modelled the costs and effectiveness over 60 days of the two approaches using decision analysis. The probabilities of various outcomes, such as re-bleeding and the need for surgery, were taken from the published literature. We included the costs of intravenous proton pump inhibitor, therapeutic endoscopy, surgical procedures and hospitalizations, all expressed in 2001 Canadian dollars.Results : In a hypothetical cohort of 1000 patients, the intravenous proton pump inhibitor approach resulted in mean savings of $20 700 with 37 re-bleeding episodes averted. The investigation of uncertainty resulted in a likelihood of intravenous proton pump inhibitor being cost-effective of at least 0.73.Conclusion : It is common in Canada to administer intravenous proton pump inhibitors to patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding even before endoscopic confirmation of bleeding peptic ulcers. Our results suggest that this approach has a high likelihood of being cost-effective.
