The crystal structure of dimeric N-methyltrichlorophosphineimine was determined by three-dimensional PATTERSON and FOURIER syntheses and refined by least-squares methods. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with a = 6.013, b = 14.04, c = 6.918 Å, β = 98.5°. The molecule has the structure of a four-membered ring with alternating P and N atoms. The P atoms are trigonal-bipyramidally coordinated. The bridging N atoms occupy one axial and one equatorial position. This means that both two different P—N and P—Cl bond lengths occur. The consideration of the P—N bond lengths gives rise to the assumption of pπ-dπ bonds.

Die Kristallstruktur des dimeren N-Methyltrichlorphosphinimins wurde über dreidimensionale PATTERSON- und FOURIER-Synthesen bestimmt und nach der Methode der kleinsten Quadrate verfeinert. Die Verbindung kristallisiert in der monoklinen Raumgruppe P21/n mit a = 6,013, b = 14,04, c = 6,918 Å, β = 98,5°. Die Molekel hat die Struktur eines Vierrings mit alternierenden P- und N-Atomen. Die P-Atome sind trigonal-bipyramidal koordiniert. Die brückenbildenden N-Atome besetzen eine axiale und eine äquatoriale Position. Daraus resultieren je zwei verschiedene P—Cl- und P—N-Bindungslängen. Die Betrachtung der P—N-Bindungslängen führt zu der Annahme von pπ-dπ-Bindungen.
