    Notes: We describe the design, operation, and calibration of a crossed-beam experiment for the study of intramultiplet mixing collisions of short-lived electronically excited Ne{(2p)5(3p)}≡{α} atoms with ground-state atoms/molecules. The excellent performance of almost 1 kHz/A(ring)2 (number of counts per unit of inelastic cross section) enables us to measure, with good accuracy, absolute total Ne**–X cross sections Q||Mk||l←k, for the {α}k→{α}l transition. Here Mk is the magnetic quantum number of the electronic angular momentum J of the initial {α}k state with respect to the asymptotic relative velocity. The polarized {α}k state is produced with a polarized laser. Narrow-band interference filters are used to detect the fluorescence radiation from the short-lived {α}k and {α}l states. An extensive series of measurements has been undertaken to calibrate the experiment. These are related to, e.g., beam properties, the optical-pumping process, and the optical detection system. The basic principles of the collision experiment itself have been thoroughly examined as well. We discuss the kinds of experiments it is possible to perform. These have yielded absolute (within 30%) cross sections between 0.05 and 50 A(ring)2. Very strong polarization effects have been observed, with 0.1(approximately-less-than)Q||0||l←k/Q||1||l←k (approximately-less-than)10. The average collision energy has been varied between 50 and 250 meV (depending to some extent on the collision partner), by using a seeded primary beam and by manipulating the Newton diagram of primary- and secondary-beam velocity vectors. Time-of-flight measurements with a laser chopper have been performed as well. The wide range of Ne**-collision partners offers the option of studying intramultiplet mixing pure (He, Ne), and in conjunction with Penning ionization (noble gas atoms Ar, Kr, Xe) or even angular-momentum coupling and anisotropy effects (molecules, from H2 to CO2, N2O).

    Notes: Unitary representations from the positive discrete series of Sp(3, R) with lowest weight w={w0w0w0} are considered. By use of new relations on the enveloping algebra, the generators are constructed as differential operators acting on functions of six real variables. Coherent states for these representations are constructed with the help of the Iwasawa decomposition and used to map the representation space to a symplectic realization on the dual sp*(3, R).

    Notes: In a previous paper of this series, the matrix elements were discussed with respect to boson states of an operator K2 required for the boson realization of the sp(4, R) Lie algebra. In the present paper, it is shown that these matrix elements can be obtained from a generating kernel given by the overlap of sp(4, R) coherent states. The results have relevance for the determination of the matrix elements of the generators of the sp(4, R) Lie algebra with respect to the basis of irreps of the positive discrete series for the corresponding group, and are, in principle, generalizable to symplectic algebras of higher dimensions.

    Notes: A caudal epidural catheter was inserted in 20 premature, high risk infants for abdominal or thoracic surgery under combined caudal epidural and general anaesthesia. Epidurography was used to confirm the position of the catheter which was found to be misplaced in three patients. The catheter penetrated the dura in one case, in another the tip was located in an epidural vessel and in the third the catheter was seen to be curled up within the epidural space. It was concluded that epidurographic control is essential with this method of anaesthesia in very small infants, in whom it was found to provide considerable advantages despite serious risks.

    Notes: Abstract. Shading of all side leaflets of a determinate soybean cultivar during pod filling significantly increased rates of photosynthesis in the unshaded centre leaflets, compared to centre leaflets of controls. Higher rates were associated with both higher stomatal and mesophyll conductances, and were reversible within 2 days when shades were removed. These higher rates of photosynthesis were not associated with decreased percentage enhancement by low oxygen, indicating that treatment effects were probably not associated with changes in photorespiration relative to photosynthesis. Percentage enhancement did, however increase as the plants approached physiological maturity, chiefly because of a decrease in photosynthesis.In spite of these increases in rates of photosynthesis seed weight per plant was decreased by 37% in plants with side leaflets shaded for the entire pod-filling period and by 28% in plants shaded for only the second half of the period. In plants where shades were removed during the second half of pod filling seed yield was reduced by only 19% because shade removal delayed leaf senescence. The four treatments reduced yield by different mechanisms. Plants shaded continuously during pod filling produced fewer seeds than controls, but the weight per seed was similar. When shading was applied during the second half of pod fillings seed number was unchanged but weight per seed was significantly reduced. In contrast when shades were removed for the second half of pod filling, seed number remained similar to that of continuously shaded plants, but seed weight increased.Although all shading treatments reduced yield, the reduction was not proportional to the 63% reduction in leaf area available for photosynthesis. This was because (1) photosynthetic rates in the centre leaflet of shaded plants were higher than rates in controls, (2) stem and lower surface photosynthesis in shaded leaf-lets contributed to whole leaflet photosynthesis.
