Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. Iron penetration from the mucosal to the serosal surface of isolated segments of rat small intestine is proportional to the iron concentration between 10−8 and 10−5 mol/l. Twice as much iron crosses the wall of jejunum than of the terminal ileum. 2. Although the iron amount of jejunum and ileum was equally decreased in iron deficiency the iron penetration increased only in jejunal segments. 3. In the reverse direction—from serosal to mucosal surface—iron penetration is also proportional to concentration. In this direction 6 times as much iron crossed the intestinal wall than from mucosal to serosal surface, while there was no difference in the rate of iron penetration between jejunum and ileum or between jejunum of normal and anemic rats. 4. In explaining this difference of iron penetration in both directions it is assumed that iron reacts to a larger extent with specific ligands on and in the mucosa cell on the way from mucosal to serosal surface than it does in the reverse direction.

Notes: Summary A procedure has been described whereby a single liver puncture provides material for both histologic and cytologic preparations. Sixty-two patients with various diseases of the liver requiring diagnostic liver biopsy were studied. The 13 patients with metastatic carcinoma in the liver diagnosed histologically had malignant cells in the cytologic preparation. An additional 2 patients with histologically normal liver biopsy specimens were found to have malignant cells on cytologic preparation. In addition to the diagnosis of neoplasia in the liver, other diseases, such as fatty infiltration, hemosiderosis, and inflammatory processes, were demonstrated by examination of the cytologic preparation. Greater sampling of the liver is accomplished by examining microscopically material that is normally discarded. The study herein reported demonstrates the value of cytologic examination of aspirated material and touch preparations from liver biopsy specimens in the diagnosis of tumors and other diseases of the liver.
