Summary In this introduction to the psychology of the aged the approach is made by an outline of the nature of mentallysane old people. They have each of them developed their own individual character; on the other hand they have generally been subject to some modifications in thinking, memory and emotions. The author then describes how the aged cope with the categories of time, above all with the past, but also with the present and the future. — Of the mentalillnesses of old age senile dementia is shown as the exaggerated caricature of normal modifications. Depressions of old age and other pathological trends are also discussed. — Finally the author investigates the inner attitude and behaviour of those who look after the aged. He points out the importance of dealing reverently with our aged companions and how we ought to consider the particular situation and to enter into the feelings of each of them.

Zusammenfassung In dieser Einführung in das seelische Leben der Betagten wird ausgegangen vom Wesen seelischgesunder alter Menschen. Es ist einerseits durch eine starke Individualisierung, anderseits durch allgemeine Modifikationen von Denken, Gedächtnis und Gemüt charakterisiert. Weiter wird dargestellt, wie sich der Betagte mit den Zeitkategorien auseinandersetzt, vor allem mit der Vergangenheit, aber auch mit Gegenwart und Zukunft. — Von den seelischen Alterskrankheiten werden die Altersverblödung als verzerrte Übersteigerung der normalen Altersveränderungen, ferner die Altersdepressionen und einige andere krankhafte Störungen geschildert. — Schließlich wird auf die innere Einstellung und das Verhalten von Betreuern der Betagten eingegangen. Wesentlich ist das Ernstnehmen des betagten Mitmenschen und das Sichhineindenken in die jeweiligen Betreuten.
