Notes: Seeded zone-melt recrystallization using a dual electron beam system has been performed on silicon-on-insulator material, which was prepared with single-crystal silicon filling of the seed windows by selective epitaxial growth. The crystal quality has been assessed by a variety of microscopic techniques, and it is shown that single-crystal films 0.5–1.0 μm thick over 1.0 μm of isolating oxide may be prepared by this method. These films have considerably less lateral variation in thickness than standard material, in which the windows are not so filled. The filling method is suitable for both single- and multiple-layer silicon-on-insulator, and gives the advantages of excellent layer uniformity after recrystallization and improved planarity of the whole chip structure. Experiments using various amounts of seed window filling have shown that the lateral variations of silicon film thickness seen in unplanarized material are due to stress relief in the cap oxide when the silicon film is molten, rather than the effect previously postulated in which they were assumed to be due to the contraction of silicon on melting.

Notes: Summary. Twelve patients with suspected primary and recurrent carcinoma of the ovary have undergone immunoscintigraphy with an anti-tumour monoclonal antibody in order to assess the impact of the technique on patient management. Consistent tumour uptake of radiolabelled antibody was visualized in malignant tumours after subtraction of the blood background activity. Eight patients were imaged before surgery and in all of these the sites of uptake visualized on the images agreed with the surgical findings. In one patient with recurrent disease the imaging information was used as an aid for establishing the extent of external beam radiotherapy. A repeat study in this patient 6 months later revealed a reduction in the size of the tumour, which still concentrated labelled antibody and confirmed the viability of repeat investigations. Immunoscintigraphy was capable of providing diagnostic information which may offer an alternative to second-look surgery in these patients.

Notes: This paper investigates the claim made by recent critics that there is a strong non-figurative element in Flaubert's work. the introduction (pp. 66–72) challenges the view of Realism proposed by Barthes, suggesting that the mimetic element should be regarded as an integral part of the semiotic system which the novel constitutes. the next section (pp. 72–77) examines Flaubertian description which, it has often been felt, has a disruptive effect; it is argued that both the symbolic and mimetic effects created by descriptive details may lessen the threat they pose to the balance of the novel. the next section (pp. 77–79) deals with plot, examining the effects of suppressing causal connectives and the various forms of disturbance - at the level of the sentence, of the units of plot, and of theme - brought about by Flaubert's deep-seated compulsion to defer. the following section (pp. 80–83) analyzes the way Flaubert uses the cultural code and challenges the view that he has capitulated to the voice of endoxal wisdom; the role of the narrator is shown to be of key importance, both in spiking human stupidity and in setting up links between the fictional world and external reality. the conclusion (pp. 83–84) suggests that Madame Bovary cannot be assimilated to either of the models put on display in the novel but successfully avoids the danger each represents.

Notes: The ‘epidemic’ of asthma deaths observed m the mid 1960s remains unexplained; various aetiological factors having been suggested. We suggest that aero-allergenic factors may have been important based on an analysis of aero-allergens in Cardiff over a 17-year period: a striking temporal association exists between the concentration of hyaline ascospores and increased asthma deaths. These spores, which are particularly prevalent in the summer months, have been inadequately studied as a cause of severe asthma.

Notes: Fifty mattress dust samples from private houses were examined—all were mite infested. Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus occurred in all samples and accounted for 81% of all mites. In thirty-two paired samples the total mite population of bedroom floor dust was only 10% of that found in the corresponding mattress dust. D. pteronyssinus was the dominant species in both and the population of this mite amounted to 7.5% of that found in the mattress dust.An analysis of mattress dust from 100 hospital beds showed that ninety-four mattresses were mite free; the other six contained only seven mites, all D. pteronyssinus. It is suggested that frequent changing and washing of bed linen and brushing and cleaning of mattresses were the main factors in preventing mite infestation in the Cardiff hospitals.
