    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Nach einer Erörterung des Vorkommens der Pentosane und der Grundlagen ihrer Chemie werden qualitative Nachweise angegeben. Es wird die Verwendung der Kristall- und optischen Eigenschaften sowie der physikalischen Konstanten der Zucker und ihrer Derivate für ihre Identifizierung vorgeschlagen. Die Grundzüge eines Verfahrens zur Identifizierung der Kristalle auf optischem Wege werden angegeben. Die auf Pentosane anwendbaren Zuckerbestimmungsverfahren werden diskutiert, wobei die Fehler der Standard-Pentosanbestimmung aufgezeigt werden. Es wird eine genaue gravimetrische Makrobestimmung der Pentosen ausgearbeitet und auf Mikromaßstab gebracht. Obwohl nur die übliche Laboratoriumausrüstung benutzt wurde, ließen sich bei Holzproben von 3 mg und Einwaagen von 0,5 bis 1,0mg verschiedener Pentosematerialien richtige und sehr genaue Resultate erzielen.
    Abstract: Résumé Après avoir discuté la chimie et l'analyse qualitative des pentosanes, l'auteur propose d'employer pour le décélement des sucres et de leurs dérivés la forme des crystaux, les propriétés optiques et les constantes physiques. Il décrit une méthode pour l'identification optique des crystaux. Puis il discute l'aptitude des différentes méthodes employées au dosage des sucres pour le dosage des pentoses. De plus il démontre les erreurs possibles, en employant la méthode d'usance pour le dosage des pentosanes. Il décrit une méthode gravimétrique exacte pour le macro-dosage des pentoses et en déduit une micro-méthode, permettant un dosage extrêmement exact, en employant des échantillons de bois de 3 mg. et des échantillons de 0,5–1,0mg. des matériaux contenant des pentoses. Pour ces recherches l'installation normale d'un laboratoire suffit complètement.
    Notes: Summary Following a discussion of the occurrence and fundamental chemistry of pentosans, qualitative tests are indicated. The utilization of crystal habits, optical properties, and physical constants of sugars and their derivatives for identification is suggested. A procedure for crystal identification by optical means is outlined. The methods of sugar estimation applicable to pentoses are discussed while the errors of the standard pentosan determination are pointed out. An accurate gravimetric macro-determination of pentoses was developed and reduced to a micro-basis. Requiring only equipment available in the laboratory, high accuracy and precision were obtained on 3 mg. samples of wood and 0,5–1,0 mg. samples of pentose materials.
