Notes: Abstract Pulses with energy of 0.5 to 15 mJ and a repetition rate of 20 kHz from a Q-switched CO2 laser with continuous discharge were employed to dissociate32SF6 and12CF3I at 0.25 mbar. Gas exchange by diffusion is rapid enough to maintain isotopic selectivity. Dissociation yields agree with those measured at slightly raised temperature by a TEA laser. Because photons are cheaper from Q-switched lasers than from TEA lasers, economic consequences can result for isotope separation.

Notes: Summary A combined method of high-performance liquid chromatography and UV-absorption spectroscopy is described for use in dynamic systems. It provides a way of obtaining detailed mechanistic information as well as quantitative data (rate constants, quantum yields), even though neither mechanism nor photoproducts are known. The kinetic treatment of the photoreaction of (E)-1-phenylpropene was successful, showing a photo-isomerization and a parallel step. Information on this additional step is obtained by using HPLC to observe the changes in the concentrations of the reactants' selectivity. The necessity of process control is demonstrated.

Notes: Abstract The A dependence of nuclear fission induced by stopped antiprotons has been measured. An unambiguous identification of the binary fission decay mode was provided by a coordinate measurement of complementary fission fragments in coincidence using a large-acceptance fission detector based on low pressure multiwire proportional chambers. A deep fissility minimum was observed nearA=100, in agreement with the general behaviour predicted by the liquid-drop model. An unexpectedly low and high fission probability was found for the Ag and Cu nuclei, respectively.

Notes: Abstract 13C isotope separation by multiphoton dissociation of CHClF2 was studied by a continuous-discharge CO2 laserQ-switched at 8 kHz. This laser can easily emit two or more wavelengths with good spatial and temporal overlap. The best irradiation results were obtained by the line pair 9P16 + 9P28. After optimizing also the pressures of CHClF2 and of buffer gases (He and Ar), the energy density and the gas speed, the process is now much less nonlinear than in previous experiments with a single wavelength. Differences to the TEA laser induced process were observed, and generally the pressure influence on yield and selectivity showed a variety of phenomena. They were interpreted in terms of collisional changes of spectra during the laser pulse.
