    Notes: Summary The immunohistochemical distribution of α and β subunits of S-100 protein (S-100α, S-100β, respectively) in 138 cases of human brain tumors was investigated by the avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase method. Brain tumors can be divided into four groups: group 1 [S-100α (+) and/or S-100β (+)]; astrocytoma, glioblastoma, ependymoma, subependymoma, oligodendroglioma, choroid plexus papilloma, gangliocytoma, meningioma, chordoma, malignant melanoma. Group 2 [S-100α (+) and S-100β (-)]; pineoblastoma, pituitary adenoma, craniopharyngioma, rhabdomyosarcoma. Group 3 [S-100α (-) and S-100β (+)]; acoustic Schwannoma. Group 4 [S-100α (-) and S-100β (-)]; medulloblastoma, malignant lymphoma, germinoma. The S-100β immunoreactivity pattern in brain tumors was similar to those obtained using conventional anti-S-100 protein sera. In the first group of brain tumors both the number of positively stained tumor cells and the staining intensity were generally greater for S-100β than for S-100α with a few exceptions including one gemistocytic astrocytoma, one subependymoma, one malignant melanoma, and some cases of glioblastomas. As to the relationship between malignancy and S-100 protein in glioma, S-100β immunoreactivity decreased according to degree of malignancy, while that of S-100α varied, suggesting a heterogeneity of tumor cells in glioblastomas. Immunostaining for S-100α and S-100β might become a useful diagnostic procedure in brain tumors and may give us more detailed and precise data of S-100 protein in brain tumors.

    Notes: Abstract A conditioned stimulus previously paired with electric footshock produced an increase in blood pressure in conscious, freely moving rats. The conditioned pressor response was reproducible. Intracerebroventricular injection of the nicotinic receptor antagonists hexamethonium (1–10 μg) or pentolinium (10 μg) but not the muscarinic receptor antagonist methylatropine (3 μg) produced an inhibition of the conditioned pressor response, whereas intraarterial injection of hexamethonium (10 μg) did not affect the response. Intraventricular injection of the cholinesterase inhibitor physostigmine (3–10 μg) produced an enhancement of the conditioned pressor response. These results are consistent with the possibility that central nicotinic receptors play a role in the expression of the emotionally conditioned pressor response in rats.

    Notes: Abstract  Rate coefficients (k) in the colloidal crystallization of monodispersed silica spheres in the presence of sodium chloride are studied in microgravity achieved by parabolic flights of an aircraft. Time-resolved reflection spectroscopy is made with a continuous circulating-type stopped-flow cell system. The k values decrease as the salt concentration increases both at 0 and 1 G and those in microgravity are smaller than those in normal gravity by 16% (maximum), especially in water and in the presence of a small amount of the salt lower than 2 × 10−6 mol/l. The rates in flight at 1 G are larger by 15% (maximum) compared with those at 1 G on the ground. The k values obtained at 0 G, 1 G in flight and 1 G on the ground agree excellently with each other for the suspensions with 3 × 10−6 and 4 × 10−6 mol/l sodium chloride. Disappearance of the downward diffusion of spheres and no convection of the suspensions are important for retardation in microgravity.
