Notizen: Abstract We have used a modified photothermal probe beam deflection system with a back pumping configuration for the measurements of the temperature-dependent thermal diffusivity of atmospheric air. The results are consistent and reasonably well agree with the literature values. The measured thermal diffusivity values are the same for the same measuring temperature regardless of the beam offsets and the deflecting surface temperatures. For the gas with known temperature-dependent thermal diffusivity, this method can be used to deduce the temperature of a gas from the measured thermal diffusivity value.

Notizen: Albumin and fibrinogen were competitively adsorbed onto dimethyldichlorosilane-coated glass (DDS-glass) and platelet activation was examined as a function of the surface fibrinogen concentration. The weight ratio of albumin to fibrinogen in the adsorption solution was varied from 10 to 700. Platelet activation was quantitated by the area and circularity of spread platelets. When the DDS-glass was coated with albumin alone, platelets were only contact adherent and could not spread at all. After competitive adsorption of fibrinogen and albumin, however, platelets were able to spread on the surface. Platelet activation increased linearly as the surface fibrinogen concentration increased up to 0.02 μg/cm2. Platelets were able to activate fully if the surface fibrinogen concentration was 0.02 μg/cm2 or higher, even though the surface was dominated by albumin. It appears that platelets can activate fully as long as only a small fraction (2-15%) of the surface is covered with tightly bound fibrinogen.

Notizen: Osseous defects and fractures may require supplimentation to support and promote healing. Bioglass® (BG) may be a useful therapeutic for these conditions. Therefore, we executed a study to determine whether particulate BG could promote healing of 20-mm unilateral ostectomies in the radius of rabbits. Ostectomies were either treated with BG or remained untreated in the control (CTL) group. At 4 and 8 weeks post-treatment, ostectomies were assessed histomorphometrically and biomechanically. New bone formation was more intense contiguous to the host bone for both BG and CTL than centrally, yet BG animals displayed active mineralization throughout the ostectomy. The amount of bone within BG-filled defects was greater than CTLs at 4 weeks, whereas, at 8 weeks there was no difference. Biomechanically, the BG-treated limbs required more torque to break than did CTL limbs at 4 weeks; however differences were not significantly different. By 8 weeks, the BG-treated and CTLs, had comparable strength. Bioglass® may be a useful therapy to produce the early phase of osseous repair. However, improvements in handling properties of the particles will be needed to enhance efficacy. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
