Notes: Abstract The resonance spectroscopic techniques - level-crossing, optical double resonance and quantum-beat spectroscopy - have been employed following pulsed laser excitation. The use of pulsed lasers has enabled spectroscopic studies of atomic structures and radiative lifetimes in the UV/VUV spectral region.

Notes: Abstract The possibilities and limitations of remote sample characterization using induced fluorescence are discussed. General equations for remote sensing of fluorescence are presented and discussed. The implications of different elements of a system for remote fluorescence sensing on different parameters of the equations are treated. Background light influence and signal processing are considered. Pulsed lasers, flashlamps and cw lamps as excitation sources are compared when matched to the proper detection scheme employing boxcar integration or lock-in detection. Model experiments have been performed to demonstrate different measurement strategies. Examples from remote oil-slick characterization are chosen as illustrations.

Notes: Abstract Knowledge of the natural emissions of mercury in the Mediterranean basin, which has largecinnabar anomalies, has particular weight as these deposits could be an important source ofatmospheric mercury. Data on the degassing rate of mercury from soils sampled both inmineralized areas (Mt. Amiata, Italy and Almaden, Spain) and rural areas are reported.Measurements were carried out ‘in situ’ using a transparent flux chamber and collecting thegaseous mercury on gold collectors. The highest values were observed in Almaden over theroasted cinnabar banks (up to 100 µg/m2h) from past and present mining activity. In Italianrural areas the values of the volatilization rate of mercury are on the order of few ng/m2h. Thedegassing rate was observed to be strongly dependent on the ambient temperature and not onlyseasonal but also daily variations were measured in all the studied areas.

Notes: Abstract The natural radiative lifetime of the 3s4p 1 P 1 level of neutral magnesium was measured by pulsed level-crossing spectroscopy at the short excitation wavelength of 202.6 nm. We obtained τ=13.4(5) ns for this state, strongly deviating from a previous beam-foil result, but in good agreement with a multi-configuration Hartree-Fock calculation. A discussion of the applicability of the pulsed Hanle effect method is given.

Notes: Abstract The radiative lifetimes of the states in the (n=5–8) 3snp 1 P 1 sequence of neutral magnesium were investigated using time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence. Excitation from the 3s 2 1 S 0 ground state was performed using VUV radiation, which was produced by resonant sum-difference frequency mixing in a krypton gas cell. We find τ(n=5): 54(3) ns, τ(n=6): 140(10) ns, τ(n=7): 290(20) ns. τ(n=8): 475(40) ns. These results were found to be in fair agreement with a Multi Configuration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) calculation.

Notes: Abstract We have performed lifetime measurements in the sequences of2 S 1/2 and2 D 3/2 states for the alkali-like 4d 10 ns,nd configurations of neutral silver. Selective stepwise excitations from the 4d 10 5s 2 S 1/2 ground state were performed using two pulsed dye lasers. Optical transients were recorded and evaluated with regard to the decay time. The lifetime results are compared with those of a theoretical study in which a model potential has been used to describe the polarisation of the 4d shell.

    Notes: Abstract The delayed coincidence photon counting technique, employing a picosecond tunable dye laser as an excitation source, has been used for accurate determinations of radiative lifetimes of excited states. Excitation from meta-stable states of sputtered atoms was employed. We obtained for Cu: τ(3d 10 4p 2 P 1/2 = 7.27(0.06) ns, τ(3d 10 4p 2 P 3/2) = 7.17(0.06) ns and for Fe: τ(3d 7 4p y 3 F 2)= 9.06(0.16) ns, τ(3d 7 4p y 3 F 3) = 9.06(0.13) ns and τ(3d 7 4p y 3 F 4) = 9.11 (0.16) ns. Also, the ability of this technique to record quantum beats at frequencies up to 1 GHz is demonstrated.

Notes: Abstract We have measured radiative lifetimes for selenium and tellurium resonance levels by using short pulse laser excitation in differentially heated resonance cells. We obtained τ(3 S 1 Se I)=2.9(5) ns and τ(3 S 1 Te I)=3.1(5) ns, which together with branching ratio values given by Ubelis and Berzinsh yield the absorption oscillator strengthf abs(Se I, 196.0 nm)=0.074(16) andf abs(Te I, 214.3 nm)=0.098(17).
