    Notizen: Abstract The concentrations of selected metabolites in the posterior temporoparietal cortex of 13 Alzheimer's diseased (AD) and four nondemented postmortem brains (of individuals between the ages of 63 and 95) were determined using high-resolution 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The estimates for glutamate and inositol for AD brains did not show any statistically significant difference (P〉0.05) from those for the nondemented brains. The putative neuronal marker N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), creatine, and GABA were decreased in AD brains compared with the nondemented brains. The estimates for creatine, glutamate, and GABA showed significant linear correlations with those of NAA. Creatine, glutamate, GABA, and NAA appeared to be negatively correlated with the neurofibrillary tangles. Our results support a neuronal loss in the posterior temporoparietal cortices of AD brains.

    Notizen: Abstract The ultraviolet spectra of Na2 and K2 molecules have been investigated. These studies were made in absorption in the second order of a 3.4 m Ebert Spectrograph with a reciprocal dispersion of 2.6 Å/mm. A number of new bands in the spectra of both the molecules not previously reported have been observed. Computer methods have been used to calculate the term values and to evaluate molecular constants.

    Notizen: Summary ‘Hydron’ is a new synthetic environmental barrier made directly on the wound surface by alternately spraying polyethylene glycel-400, which is a liquid, and polyhydroxymethyle methacrylate powder. Different thicknesses of ‘Hydron’ film were tested as barriers to bacterial penetration while still allowing evaporation from the wound and permitting antibiotics applied to the surface of the film to pass through to the wound. Six test strains of known sensitivity were used, three of Staphylococcus aureus and three of Pseudomonas pyocyaneus. The study proved convincingly that the thicker type II and type III films were impermeable to bacteria but allowed evaporation and permitted antibiotics applied to the surface to get through it to the wound. Type I film, using only two layers of fluid and one layer of powder is ineffective as a barrier to bacteria.

    Notizen: A simple method for the determination of the composition of compounds and alloys by using the data for chemical shifts of x-ray absorption edges is suggested. It is found that the calculated compositions of compounds are in good agreement with standard composition values.

    Notizen: The shift of the K-absorption edge (ΔEk) was measured in ternary alloys of Ga30Se70-xInx (x = 0, 5, 10, 15, 20) with respect to the binary Ga30Se70 alloy. It was observed that the K-edge of selenium shifted progressively towards the lower energy side as the indium concentration increased from 0 to 10 at.%. However, at higher concentrations, the relative shift started to decrease. These results are in accordance with Pauling's concept of electronegativity and indicate that the nature of the bond is iono-covalent in these glasses, as found in many crystalline solids. The composition dependence of the edge shift is also discussed in terms of the structure of the Se—Ga system.
