Notes: Summary Films of cobalt and nickel were electroplated in the presence of an external magnetic-induction field. This resulted in the deposition of magnetic films which show, in addition to a magnetic anisotropy, also thermo-e.m.f. anisotropy. The latter is a new effect, not deriving from the anisotropy in electrical conduction deduced earlier by Kornevet al. on the basis of measurements of transmission coefficients of polarized RF field.

Notes: Summary It is seen that low-temperature annealing of nickel wires forbids the complete filling in of thed-band of nickel when the latter is subjected to cathodic-hydrogen diffusion. At a certain low-temperature range irreversible changes occur in the orientation of the surface planes of nickel which persist even if the temperature is raised to the room temperature.

Notes: Summary Samples of nickel wires were aged at low temperature, then subjected to hydrogen diffusion electrolytically. Thermomagnetic effect was measured both before and after hydrogenation. The latter samples show a more regular variation than the former ones (without hydrogenation), indicating that the hydrogen-treated samples are electrically more homogeneous due to the presence of hydrogen trapped at some lattice sites.

Notes: Summary If hydrogen is diffused electrolytically in a metal, it subsequently escapes out if the metal is left to itself. However this hydrogen-treated metal does not totally regain the original magnitudes of its various physical properties,e. g., thermo e.m.f., electrical resistivity, elastic modulii etc. This effect has also been observed in the second-order elastic effect (the Poynting effect) in nickel and two varieties of steel. Measurements were carried out first before hydrogen diffusion. The samples were electrolytically diffused with hydrogen and the left to themselves for a few days and the measurements were repeated. The changed values of the coefficient of Poynting effect are discussed in terms of the dislocations created by in-and out-going hydrogen.

Notes: Abstract Tungsten ores from Degana, Rajashthan State, India are studied using Mössbauer spectroscopy. The low grade ore exhibits two types of mineral assemblages as per chemical states of iron. The relation between ferrous/ferric ratio and tungsten concentration also supports the existence of two types of mineral assemblages. The Mössbauer spectroscopy of concentrate ore samples has shown the absence of iron. The energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy on the contrary has evidenced the presence of iron in concentrate ore samples but at lower concentration on comparison with low grade ores. These differences in behaviour in the above spectroscopic studies may be additionally due to higher attenuation of γ-radiations and higher atomic weight material in the ore concentrates.

Notes: Abstract The corrosion of mild steel as a result of interaction with various types of local natural water samples and distilled water is studied with the help of Mössbauer spectroscopy. The data are supplemented with the studies on IR and magnetic properties as and when required. Distilled water and potable water behave in almost similar fashion wherein ferrihydrite and FeOOH are observed to be the precursors of magnetite, the end corrosion product. In case of brakish water, the additional species, viz., FeCl2, βFeOOH and an intermediate possibly FeOCl are accounted, and possible mechanisms are suggested.
