Notes: Abstract  The properties of polymer films prepared from latex dispersions are influenced by the drying or film formation process. In order to investigate this process, various systems of aqueous latex dispersions were dried until a specific solid content was reached. The samples investigated were based on vinyl acetate, vinyl acetate/ethylene and pure acrylics employing different surfactants and polyelectrolytes as stabilisers of the dispersions. The role of water in these partially dried films was investigated using 1H and 2H solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Different types of water could be distinguished in the spectra. The drying latex films were found to contain interfacial external water, water at ionic and nonionic groups at surfactants in the polymer/water interface and also water inside the swollen polymer. These different types of water were examined separately using various NMR techniques.

Notes: Abstract We studied the serum aluminium levels of 30 intensive care patients receiving six daily doses of magaldrate (Riopan®) or aluminium hydroxide (Trigastril®). In both groups we found a significant rise of the serum aluminium concentration (p〈0.01) following administration of the antacid solutions. Examination on day 9 and 15 the magaldrate group showed significantly (p〈0.05) lower aluminium levels than the aluminium hydroxide group. An increase up to the critical serum aluminium level of 100 ng/ml occurred in none of the patients that all had normal or slightly impaired renal function. Therefore routine measurements of serum aluminium levels in patients without renal impairment are not considered necessary following antacid therapy. However, we recommend the use of antacids with an aluminium absorption rate as low as possible.

Notes: Abstract Above-yrast states in the one-ptoton nucleus147Tb were studied in144Sm(6Li,3n)γ- and electron-measurements at the Coulomb barrier. Together with data from a separate study of147Dyβ-decay, members of all ten particle×phonon configurations of147Tb were identified, including the completeπh11/2×3− and πs1/2×3− octupole multiplets.

Notes: Elastic-plastic finite element calculations have been carried out to analyse sheet forming processes such as hydrostatic bulging of circular and rectangular blanks and the axisymmetric stretching of sheets (with different punch radii). The results, partly obtained by different finite element models, are compared with experimental data. It could be shown that, regarding the examples considered, experiments and calculations fit well and that a more sophisticated modelling of the contact boundary conditions improves the accuracy of the results. As a first attempt to handle more complex sheet forming operations, the deep drawing of a rectangular cup has been analysed. A summary of the theoretical background as well as some comments on the solution method and the implementation are given.

Notes: This article introduces quadtree and octree like methods to numerical integration. Four recursive and auto-adaptive algorithms are presented: one for two-dimensional integrals over a triangular region, one for two-dimensional integrals over a quadrilateral region, one for three-dimensional integrals over a tetrahedral region and one for three-dimensional integrals over a cubic region. The algorithms have been proven to work fast. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
