    Notes: Abstract The relative stability of 2-hydroxytetrahydrofuran and the tautomeric 4-hydroxybutanal was determined by the semi-empirical AM1 method. It was concluded that the cyclic tautomer predominates in the gas phase at 25°C. Vapor-phase dehydration of 2-hydroxytetrahydrofuran in the presence of porcelain and silica gel L leads to a quantitative yield of 2,3-dihydrofuran.

    Description / Table of Contents: Untersuchung der Spannungs-Dehnungs-Beziehungen von anfänglich anisotropen Metallen unter den Bedingungen proportionaler und nicht proportionaler BelastungFür praktische Berechnungen basiert die Plastizitätstheorie üblicherweise auf der Annahme der Materialisotropie. Handelsübliche metallische Werkstoffe sind jedoch i.a. anisotrop infolge vorhergehender thermischer und/oder mechanischer Vorbehandlungen.Aluminium-, Titan- und Magnesiumlegierungen sind typische strukturanisotrope Werkstoffe. Deren breite Anwendung in vielen ingenieurtechnischen Bereichen erfordert jedoch eine genauere Bestimmung der mechanischen Eigenschaften unter verschiedenen typischen Belastungsbedingungen.In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird eine einfache Theorie für anisotrope Metalle vorgestellt, die auf Experimenten zur elastischplastischen Verformung ursprünglich anisotroper Metalle unter einfacher (proportionaler) Belastung sowie für den Spezialfall einer Belastung entlang eines unstetigen Spannungsweges beruht.
    Notes: In plasticity theories-applied in practical calculations- are usually based on the assumption of materials isotropy.Commercially obtained structural metallic materials however are originally anisotropic due to various kinds of thermal and mechanical treatments.Aluminium, titanium and magnesium alloys are typical anisotropic structural materials. The wide application of these materials in different fields of engineering demands more accurate mechanical behaviour predictions for these alloys under various conditions of loadings.In the aper, a simple theory of plasticity for anisotropic metals is proposed which is based on the results of experimental investigations into elasto-plastic deformation of initially anisotropic aluminium alloys subjected to simple (proportional) loading as well as under loading along stress path with a corner.

    Notes: Oligodeoxyribonucleotide derivatives containing ethidium or azidoethidium residues attached to 3′ and/or 5′ end were prepared. These derivatives formed tight specific complexes with complementary oligodeoxyribonucleotides where each attached ethidium residue led to an increase of complex Tm by 20-30°C. Tandem complexes of two oligodeoxyribonucleotides containing ethidium residues with an oligodeoxyribonucleotide having two adjacent complementary sequences for these Oligonucleotide were investigated. Photoinduced reactions of a number of ethidium and azidoethidium oligodeoxyribonucleotide derivatives with target complementary single-stranded and double-stranded oligo- and polydeoxyribonucleotides were investigated. The irradiation led to direct photocleavage of the target oligo- or polynucleotide, to formation of hidden (piperidine cleavable) modifications of the target of formation of covalent adducts between ethidium oligodeoxyribonucleotide derivative and the target. In a number of experiments, azidoethidium dyes were demonstrated to be considerably stronger photosensitizers than ethidium ones. Depending on the nature of the target (single- or double-stranded DNA) and on the irradiation conditions, the total damages to the target oligo- or polydeoxyribonucleotides ranged from 10-70% (for ethidium dyes) to 30-80% (for azidoethidium dyes).

    Notes: Abstract Levels of lipoperoxides and hydrophobic scavengers of free radicals were estimated in n-hexane extracts of myocardial biopsy specimens taken from cardiac patients (children and adults) during surgical operations. Ultraviolet spectra of these extracts were found to contain four absorption bands with peaks at 214, 233, 258, and 298 nm that characterize the levels of diene and triene conjugates. A comparison of the data obtained for children and adults suggested that the total antiradical activity of the cardiac muscle decreases while its content of vitamin E remains virtually unchanged during ontogeny. Significantly reduced vitamin E levels were noted in specimens from patients with chronic ischemic heart disease.

    Notes: Abstract Ternary copolymers of the diallyl series were tested for antiradical activity against the stable radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, and the numbers of active antitradical fragments which are present in their macromolecules and which may participate in the free-radical reactions induced by gamma radiation in living organisms were estimated. A correlation was found between the antiradical activity of ternary copolymers and their ability to protect barley seedling roots from mutagenic effects of gamma radiation.

    Notes: Sequence-specific photomodification of oligodeoxynucleotide pAGAGTATTGACTTA (“a target”) has been carried out with the aid of complementary fluorescent probes. Such a probe consisted of oligodeoxynucleotide pAATACTCT and a chromophore group attached to its 5′ end. Three different derivatives of ethidium bromide were used as a chromophore. The photomodification was induced by nitrogen laser radiation (337 nm, 15 MW /cm2). The irradiation induces the following photodamages: target cleavage at the specific binding site with a cutting off of the 8-mer from its 5′ end (yield up to 12%), formation of specific covalent adduct target-probe with a yield of 20-70%, and piperidine-sensitive target modifications with a 7-27% yield (for different chromophores). The total yield of specific photodamages of all kinds is 50-80%. The target cleavage and generation of piperidine-sensitive modifications are optically nonlinear processes. Piperidine treatment of the irradiated samples led to specific cleavage of the target with the yield up to 40%. All kinds of observed modifications are not influenced by high concentrations of free radical scavengers: 1.3M tBuOH and 10 mM cystamine. The pattern of cleavage indicates that the most probable position of the chromophore is between T8 and G9 of the target, i.e., the chromophore stacks on top of the last A · T base pair of the duplex. The aggregate of evidence is in agreement with the mechanism of nonlinear photomodification (the cleavage and generation of piperidine-sensitive modifications) based on the transfer of two-photon excitation energy from the chromophore to the target.
