Notes: Abstract The yrast levels of theN=83 odd-odd nuclei150Ho and152Tm have been studied byγ-ray spectroscopy following reactions induced by 240–250 MeV60Ni ions. Isomers have been identified in150Ho at 1.096, 2.625 and ∼8.0 MeV and in152Tm at 2.555 and ∼ 6.3 MeV, and the level schemes of both nuclei have been established up to 2.6 MeV. The level spectra are interpreted using the shell model in terms of the coupling of anf 7/2,h 9/2 or i13/2 valence neutron to the yrast excitations of the neighboring N=82 nuclei.

    Notes: Abstract Isomeric decays in116, 118, 120Sn and119, 120Sb have been studied by measurements of delayedγ-rays following reactions of 26–40 MeV7Li ions on Cd targets. A 6.3 μs isomer of $$(vh_{11/2} ^n )^{10 + } $$ character in120Sn is reported. The experimental variation inB(E2, 10+ → 8+) between $$vh_{11/2} ^n $$ states in116, 118, 120, 128, 130Sn is compared with the expected dependence on vh11/2 subshell occupation number. Isomerism in Sb nuclei is also discussed, and a known high-spin isomer in119Sb is assigned the same seniority-three configuration $$(\pi d_{5/2} vh_{11/2} ^n )^{25/2 + } $$ as a well-established 340 μs isomer in117Sb.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of γ-rays from mass analyzed nuclear recoils produced in the102Pd +54Fe reaction at 245MeV have allowed us to characterize the decay of a 35 μs isomer in154Lu. The rates of E2 transitions de-exciting isomeric levels in proton-rich N=82, 83 isotones are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Yrast- and above-yrast states in149Tb were investigated in (α, 6n) and (7Li, 2n) in-beamγ-ray experiments. The yrastγ-ray cascade strongly populates three-valenceparticle states involving theh 11/2 proton and thef 7/2,h 9/2, or;i 13/2 neutron orbitals, as well as the high-spin levels formed by the couplings of the three149Tb valence particles, to the low-lying146Gd octupole phonon and to higher-lying proton particle-hole core excitations. The data give the (πh 11/2 vi 13/2)12− attraction free of octupole contributions as -631 keV. The shell model with empirical two-particle- and particle-phonon residual interactions gives an excellent quantitative description of the149Tb energy levels. It is noted that the observed highspin members of theπh 11/2 vh 9/2 v f 7/2 configuration closely resemble the lowest symmetric and mixed-symmetry representations of theS 3 permutation group.

Notes: Abstract Microsecond isomers in the exotic proton-richN=82, 83 nuclei153Yb,153Lu,154Lu and154Hf have been identified byγ-ray spectroscopy following mass analysis of102Pd+245 MeV54Fe reaction products using the Daresbury Recoil Separator. The decays of the isomers, interpreted asπh 11 2/n andπh 11 2/n vf7/2 states, are characterized. The reduced E2 transition rates indicate that half-filling of theπh11/2 subshell occurs just belowZ=71, and results for theN=83 odd-odd isotones are also consistent with this finding.

Notes: Raman scattering is a possible technique for analysing gas mixtures. In the work here described Raman scattering was used for detection of gases extracted from different model fires, where wood, polymethylmetachrylate (PMMA) and polystyrene were used as test materials. Raman spectra of gas samples from differently ventilated model fires are presented as well as the variation of O2, CO2 and CO concentrations as a function of time with an effective time constant of less than 5 s. The sensitivity of the experimental set-up was estimated to be about 1000 ppm, but suggestions are given how to reach a detection limit of about 1 ppm. The feasibility of the technique and various ways of improving it are briefly discussed.

Notes: Three test methods for measuring the rate of heat release, RHR, have been compared on the same building materials. The test methods are the OSU-box modified for O2-consumption, the STFI open arrangement and the NBS cone calorimeter. All methods are based on the oxygen-consumption technique. Radiation intensities up to 50 k Wm-2 have been applied. Thirteen different materials were tested. The results obtained using the three methods seem to be quite similar in spite of the different equipment used. The minor deviations observed in the results seem to be systematic and may be due to the different testing arrangements. There is a good correlation between results, e.g. total heat release up to 1min after ignition, obtained by the different methods. Additional information about the time to ignition is obtained simultaneously. Heat-release rates in the vertical and horizontal orientations are also compared in the NBS cone calorimeter.
