Notes: Summary The carcinogenicity of 2,2-dioxopropylnitrosamine on the urinary tract was investigated in three experimental groups of Sprague-Dawley rats (15 males, 15 females/group) by weekly subcutaneous administration for the life of the carcinogen at dose levels 1/5, 1/10 and 1/20 of the LD50, and compared with that in a similar group of untreated controls. It resulted in the induction of urinary tract tumours in 42 out of 79 effective animals (53%). Of these animals, 38 developed tumours within the renal pelvis. In the high-dose group, females had a 100% incidence of renal pelvic tumours, and males 73%. In all experimental groups, renal pelvic tumours were more frequent than ureteral and vesical ones. Histologically, the tumours were transitional cell papillomas and carcinomas, except for one squamous carcinoma. Out of 66 tumours, 42 (64%) were low-grade. High-grade tumours arose mainly in the renal pelvis of animals belonging to the highest-dose group. This experiment offers a useful model for the study of mechanisms involved in renal pelvic carcinogenesis.

Notes: Abstract The subject of this paper is to propose and test a set of numerical descriptors of 2D binary planar shapes. Given a shape, A, the transformations of A with a given mathematical morphological operation and different structuring elements are considered. The measures of this family of transformed sets provide a numerical description of the original set A. These descriptors are very robust against noise and maintain a reasonable discriminatory power. The robustness against different levels of contour degradation is tested by simulation. Starting with a clean (without noise) set, Λ, it is assumed that the observed set, A, is a noisy version (with contour degradation) of Λ. The performance of the descriptors, when they are used to compare different shapes or shapes from a scene with models, is studied and compared with related descriptors based on the granulometric analysis of the original set, which are the closest previous alternative to our approach in the literature.

Notes: Alterations of cell surface glycoconjugates have been observed in many developing systems and may be important in the physiological control of growth and differentiation. Liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy is a suitable model in which to study the regulatory mechanisms of cell proliferation in vivo. We have isolated the sinusoidal plasma membrane of hepatocytes at different times after partial hepatectomy. The sialic acid content and the SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis pattern of glycoproteins were determined. A decrease of periodic acid-Schiff-profiles, a change in the binding capacities of 125I-concanavalin A, a reduction of the sialic acid content and the appearance and disappearance of specific components have been observed during the pre-replicative phase of liver regeneration. These findings during this early period are consistent with the active involvement of the plasma membrane glycoproteins in the transition of cells to the proliferative state.
