Notes: Abstract The isotope shift between all stable neodymium isotopes has been measured for 21 transitions in the Nd I spectrum by means of laser-atomic-beam absorption spectroscopy. A parametric analysis of the observed shifts in all the levels of the terms5 I,5 F, and5 S of the ground configuration 4f 46s 2 yields not only the magnetic parameterz 4f but, for the first time, also the effective electrostatic parametersa,b, andc. A more accurate value of the nuclear parameter λ148,150 (Nd)=0.369(20) fm2 is obtained from the investigation of a 4f 35d6s 2−4f 35d6s6p transition. The comparison of non-relativistic Hartree-Fock calculations with the experimental data yields a scaling factorS I * (Nd)=1.50(9) that agrees with the corresponding one from the hyperfine structure analysis.

Notes: Abstract The isotope shift in the arc spectrum of hafnium was studied in 10 lines for the isotopes176Hf,178Hf, and180Hf by means of a photoelectric recording Fabry-Perot spectrometer with digital data processing. The observed shifts together with results from an earlier study were analyzed by means of the parametric method. The field shift difference between the terms 5d 3(4 F) 6s 5 F and3 F resulted in 17(2) mK for the isotope pair178,180Hf. This reflects the influence of a second-order effect which is described by the parameterg 2=−4.4(6) mK. The parameterz 5d , displaying the magnitude of spin-dependent effects in the isotope shift of 5d 36s, was found to be 0.8(2) mK for the same isotope pair. The experimental data are compared with results obtained from the non-relativistic Hartree-Fock method. The calculated electron densities describe the experimental field shifts with good accuracy. Hartree-Fock screening ratios for various types of transitions were used to evaluate changes in mean-square nuclear charge radii. The mean value ofλ 178,180≈δ〈r 2〉178,180 equals 0.069(10) fm2.

Notes: Abstract By means of classical interference spectroscopy, using enriched isotope samples, the isotope shift between178Hf and180Hf has been measured for 33 transitions in the Hf II spectrum. For the pure Russell-Saunders terms 5d 26s 4 F and2 F the parametric analysis yields a field-shift difference of 17(2) mK produced by the second-order interaction of the electrostatic operator and the field-shift operator. Semi-empirical calculations based on the non-relativistic Hartree-Fock method reproduce this value as well as the experimental field shifts if a factor of 1.68(6) is used to scale theab initio electron densities at the nucleus. The corresponding factor for the Hf atom is much smaller. This leads to a re-evaluation of screening ratios for Hf and to a more accurate value of the nuclear parameter λ178,180 (Hf)=0.072(4) fm2.

Notes: Abstract Radiative lifetimes of the 4f 7 (8 S) 6s 6p z 10 P 7/2, 9/2,z 8 P 5/2, 7/2, 9/2 andz 6 P 7/2, 5/2 levels of Eu I were measured by the time resolved recording of the exponential decay of the fluorescence. Three of them were measured for the first time, the others agree with previous determinations. From the values of the lifetimes absolute oscillator strengths are deduced, taking into account the branching ratios for the transitions to the 4f 7 6s 2 and 4f 7 5d 6s levels. From these absolutef values the radial integralI(6s 2, 6s 6p) was derived by a parametric analysis. Theoretical values of oscillator strengths which were calculated using this radial integral show good agreement with the experimental data.

Notes: The occurence of multiple forms of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) in methylotrophic yeasts is known from the literture. But no systematic work has been done to characterize these enzymes in detail. The aim of this work was to establish a suitable electrophoretic method for visualization of the ADH-patterns of these organisms. It was found that the recovery of the enzyme activity during polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) depends on the composition of the gel buffer. The ADH of five different methylotrophic yeasts from the genera Candida, Pichia and Hansenula were analyzed. Every investigated organism shows rather complex ADH-patterns.

Notes: Laccase (E.C. 1.10.3.2) is slowly inhibited by lower fatty acids in a reversible reaction. The degree of inhibition depends on kind and concentration of the fatty acid, but not on the concentration of the enzyme itself. The degree of inhibition increases with the chain length of the fatty acids. The maximum inhibition was found with butyric acid.
