    Notes: Abstract Clusters nucleated by inert gas aggregation have been studied by HREM. The clusters were supported by amorphous carbon films and by crystalline graphite fibres. Multiply twinned particles with 5-fold axes of symmetry were observed whose structures and orientations are discussed. It is also demonstrated that crystalline graphite substrates can be used to calibrate lattice distances and to improve the image processing. With the help of computer simulations complex structures were resolved.

    Notes: Abstract Multislice calculations have been performed for Ag, Pd and Au clusters in the size range of ≃ 5.0 nm diameter of cuboctahedral, icosahedral and decahedral structures. It could be shown that tilt series are necessary for the classification of the structures. Particularly for arbitrary orientations, i.e. deviations from main directions such as 2-, 3- and 5-fold axes, the performance of computer simulations is mandatory. The influence of absorption is also studied for the case of a 100 kV microscope by introducing a complex potential.

    Notes: Abstract Using the gasaggregation technique it is possible to generate metal clusters in narrow size distributions and to vary their mean size by adjusting the cell parameters. The high intensity of this source allows to detect besides singly charged clusters also multiply charged ones. Ag n 2+ and Ag n 3+ are observed forn≧9 andn≧31, respectively; i.e. at values well below the critical sizes reported for spheres.

    Notes: Abstract Silver clusters grown by the inert gas aggregation technique have been investigated by HREM. Undistorted cuboctahedra and icosahedra together with twinned particles have been observed. Three types of nucleation and growth mechanisms are proposed which can explain the observed particle structures. The untwinned large particles are created by the coalescence of liquid- like small clusters. The twins are produced by the coalescence of solid subunits.
