    Notes: Abstract Two abundant macrozooplankters, Oikopleura vanhoeffeni (Lohmann) and Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) were collected from the coastal waters off Newfoundland in different seasons during 1990–1991 and incubated in natural seawater to collect freshly egested, field produced, fecal pellets. The densities of fecal pellets from O. vanhoeffeni and C. finmarchicus were measured in an isosmotic density gradient. These are the first reported seasonal measurements of fecal pellet densities from two different types of macrozooplankters, O. vanhoeffeni, a larvacean, filter feeder and C. finmarchicus, a crustacean, suspension feeder. Pellet density ranges and medians were significantly different among seasons for both species, depending primarily on the type of phytoplankton ingested and its ability to be compacted. Winter O. vanhoeffeni and fall C. finmarchicus feces filled with nanoplankters and soft bodied organisms had less open space [packing index (% open area) = 3.5 and 4% for O. vanhoeffeni and C. finmarchicus, respectively] and were more dense (1.23 and 1.19 g cm-3) than spring feces filled with diatoms (packing index = 15 and 23%, density = 1.13 and 1.11 gcm-3). For copepods, these results contrast with previously published density values and with the predicted copepod fecal pellet density calculated, in the present study, using the conventional mass/volume relationship. Copepod spring and summer diatom-filled feces had a calculated density of 1.12 and 1.24 gcm-3 vs a measured median density of 1.11 gcm-3 for both spring and summer feces; the fall feces containing nanoplankters had a calculated density of 1.08 gcm-3 vs a measured median density of 1.19 gcm-3. Knowledge of the seasonal variations in fecal pellet densities is important for the development of flux models.

    Notes: Abstract Diffuse infantile haemangiomatosis of the spleen is a very rare lesion. Large haemangiomas may cause trapping of platelets and coagulation disorders known as Kasabach-Merrit syndrome. We here report the case of an infant with splenic and pancreatic haemangiomatosis presenting with life-threatening thrombocytopenia, anaemia and intravascular coagulation. Diagnosis was hampered by reactive erythroblastosis and non-conclusive radiological findings. While treatment with corticosteroids was ineffective, administration of antithrombin III improved coagulation parameters. After splenectomy the child recovered promptly and has remained free of disease for 3 years to date. Conclusion Occult visceral haemangiomatosis without visible cutaneous haemangiomas should be included in the differential diagnosis of thrombocytopenia, anaemia and consumption coagulopathy. Antithrombin III treatment may be considered to overcome bleeding problems in patients with Kasabach-Merrit syndrome.

    Notes: Abstract A new way of representing data on the fragmentation of nuclei is suggested. The self-similar behavior of these processes, that is dictated by their kinematics, is demonstrated. The convenience of working in accelerated nuclei is emphasized, particularly for the determination of the binding energy of a wide class of nuclear fragments.

    Notes: Electron impact ionization cross sections measured close to threshold are reported for both the monomers and dimers of ozone and OClO using a new high resolution electron impact apparatus. The present appearance energies AE(O3+/O3)=12.70±0.02 eV, AE (OClO+/OClO)=10.55±0.02 and AE(ClO+/OClO=13.37±0.03 eV derived from the measured ionization cross sections are in excellent agreement with the vertical threshold values determined for these ions by high resolution PES and PIMS photoionization studies. The corresponding appearance energies determined for the dimer ions, 10.10±0.3 eV for (O3)2+ and 9.87±0.2 eV for (OClO)2+, are both red shifted with respect to the monomer case. The bond energy (0.70–0.3+0.5) eV of (OClO)2+ estimated from these data is similar to that of other dimer ions, whereas the bond energy of (O3–O3+) with (2.55−0.4+0.6) eV is rather large suggesting an unusual structure for the cationic ozone dimer ion. Based on quantum chemical calculations on various levels we are led to the conclusion that the ion produced by ionization of the ozone dimer is no longer a conventional dimer ion where the two monomer units are still present (as is the case for the OClO system), but rather an ion of form O2(centered ellipsis)O4+ or a twisted ring structure of (O6)+. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A method is given for correcting the integral intensities of X-ray reflexions from platelets of single crystals or powders for secondary extinction and thermal diffuse scattering (TDS). The line profiles are calculated as folding integrals from theoretical functions considering the crystallite size distribution, the total absorption, and TDS. By means of variation of the unknown parameters (fraction of TDS to the overall intensity, mean crystallite size and their polydispersity, and absorption coefficient, secondary extinction included) the calculated function has to fit the measured line profile. A detailed description of this method according to Bradaczek and Hosemann is given after introducing some modifications such as collimation errors of the primary beam and anisotropy of the lattice vibrations. The method is applied to measured line profiles of NaCl and LiF single crystals.

    Notes: In order to correct X-ray integrated intensities for thermal diffuse 1-phonon scattering, the influence of the anisotropy of the lattice vibrations was examined. Using an oscillating-crystal technique with a long slit between source and goniometer, it is shown that the anisotropy of the three-dimensional intensity function of the 1-phonon scattering is smeared out by means of a twofold integration, such that an isotropic approximation can be applied. In all cases under investigation (NaCl, LiF) the systematic error was less than 1% of the total integrated intensity of a reflexion if this approximation was applied. An elegant criterion is given to test the applicability of the spherically symmetric isotropic approximation.

    Notes: The influences of sample size and mosaic block size upon X-ray thermal diffuse scattering have been investigated. Surface and edge vibrational modes were incorporated into the Debye spectrum. Two additional terms, which depend on the surface/volume and edge-length/volume ratios, appear therefore in the expression for the scattered intensity. The TDS contributions of the volume and surface terms to the integrated Bragg intensity are calculated numerically.

    Notes: On the basis of the solutions of Darwin's energy-transfer equations the influence of the line profile of the primary beam on the extinction of X-ray and neutron intensities has been studied. Numerical calculations for the plane parallel plate, a wedge and a spherical sample were performed. The plane parallel plate is not affected by the primary beam. For the wedge only small influences were found (up to 12%). Spherically shaped crystals were investigated with a constant, a sawtooth-shaped and a δ-function-shaped primary beam. The influence of the primary beam increases with the variable σr0. General formulae for arbitrary shapes of crystals and primary beams are given which may be used for specific experiments.
