Notes: Summary The time course of appearance of meprobamate in beard hair after single oral administration (400, 800, or 1200mg) was monitored in 3 groups of 4 subjects by GC/MS. Meprobamate appeared in beard hair approximately 4–5 days after administration and peaked during the 7–9th day. Drug levels in beard hair appeared to be dose-related.

Notes: Abstract By providing information on exposure to drugs over time, hair analysis is useful in verifying the history of drug use. In a clinical case, where drug abuse was denied, it was possible to identify dextromoramide in the hair of the subject. After acid hydrolysis of the hair with 0.1 M HCl, in the presence of SKF 525A as an internal standard, the drug was extracted at pH8.4 with chloroform-isopropanol-n-heptane (50:17:33 v/v) and quantified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The hair strands were cut into 3 sections of 2.5 cm, corresponding to a growth period of 2 months. Concentrations were 1.09, 1.93 and 1.48 ng/mg from the root to the end, respectively. This is the first report on dextromoramide testing in human hair.

Notes: Summary A capillary gas chromatography mass spectrometry assay has been developed for the determination of 6-monoacetylmorphine in human urine, which is a confirmatory marker of heroin abuse. It was extracted with chloroform-isopropanol-n-heptane (50:17:33, v/v) from alkalinized samples (pH 9.2), using levallorphan as the internal standard. After derivatization with trifluoroacetic anhydride, the drugs were separated on a 25-m capillary column BP 10 and detected by selected ion monitoring.

Notes: Summary While hair has for sometime been analyzed for assessment of trace elements, it is only in recent years that attention has been focused on this matrix as a possible means of evaluating drug impregnation. This technique was applied to treated subjects and drug abusers for determination of drug consummation. The method involved decontamination in ethanol, solubilization in sodium hydroxide at 100°C for 10 min, extraction in chloroform/isopropanol/n-heptane (50:17:33, v/v), separation on a BP-5 capillary column (GC) and detection by mass spectrometry. Hair samples were analysed for barbiturates, antidepressants, benzodiazepines, β-blockers, nicotine, opiates, benzoylecgonine, cannabis and amphetamines.
