Notes: Summary In a randomized trial the efficiency of synthetic secretin (0,25 clinical units/kg bw/h; 15 patients) was compared with that of synthetic somatostatin (250 µg/h, 15 patients) in treatment of severe acute non arterial bleeding from peptic ulcers or stress lesions in the upper digestive tract. In all patients the presence of hemorrhage at beginning of the therapy was established by endoscopic examination. Both test preparations were given as continuous infusions over 48 h and had identical effects on the hemorrhage: in 12 patients (80%) out of each group bleeding stopped during the infusion of secretin or somatostatin, 6 patients (20%) had to be operated on for persistant bleeding or severe recurrence.

Notes: Abstract Infrared spectra of nitrogen doped Czochralski-grown silicon indicate absorption lines in addition to the well-known lines of local modes of oxygen, carbon and nitrogen centers. The most prominent lines of them can be shown to be correlated with certain oxygen and nitrogen concentrations. These lines are, therefore, thought to arise from N-O complexes and are discussed in the context of an O-induced disturbance of N2-pair vibrations. The results of preliminary investigations on the stability of such complexes are also reported.

Notes: Abstract The resistivity of boron-doped silicon can be significantly increased by polishing such material with an appropriate amine- and copper-containing slurry. This effect is ascribed to a passivation of the boron acceptors by a defect produced or introduced by the polishing process. Three new, so far unknown localized vibrational modes at 691, 720, and 1038 cm−1 are observed in highly boron-doped silicon samples after such a polishing treatment. Two of these localized modes can be identified as due to a boron-containing defect. High concentrations of copper found in the samples after appropriate polishing indicate a participation — either directly or indirectly — of this metal in the passivation process.

Notes: Summary The results of 270 patients, admitted from 1978 to 1985 because of upper gastrointestinal bleeding from ulcers or erosions were analysed retrospectively. Chronic peptic ulcers were the most common bleeding sites (192 patients, 71%). 49 patients (18%) bled from acute lesions and 29 (11%) from drug-induced ulcers. 53% of all patients exhibited an oozing hemorrhage (type Forrest 1b) during emergency endoscopy. Within the eight-year-period hospital mortality dropped from 18% to 8%. In parallel the prognosis of oozing bleeding improved. In this period the patients were more often treated with secretin or somatostatin. Hence the frequency of emergency operations for patients with oozing bleeding could be reduced from 44% in 1978 to 10% in 1985 and the death rate from 22% to 5%.
