    Notes: Abstract We amplified, via PCR, DNA segments from intron 1 of the tyrosine hydroxylase gene (TH01) and intron 40 of the von Willebrand factor gene (VWA) in ten nonhuman primate genera. In humans both introns contain polymorphic microsatellites with tetrameric repeats. Compared to the allelic ranges in human populations relatively short repeat arrays could be detected for the nonhuman primates typed, presumably reflecting an ancient precursor state at both microsatellite loci. Furthermore, our results provide evidence for an association of the average number of repeats present in different primate genera and their divergence time from man. DNA sequencing of VWA orthologues revealed a relatively high variability in the arrangement of repeats in the 5′-repeat arrays, the generation of which could probably be explained by polar mutational events.

    Notes: Summary Parenchymal deposits with the histochemical characteristics of acid glycosaminoglycans were discovered in the brains of 12 chimpanzees ranging from 6 months gestational age to 17 months post partum. Similar deposits were not seen in the brains of one fetus of approximately 3 1/2 month gestational age or in the brains of three animals that were 10 or more years of age. The deposits were found primarily in thecapsula interna, lentiform nucleus, andcapsula externa. Only a few deposits were located in the thalamus. In most instances, the mucopolysaccharid deposits were surrounded by accumulations of glial cells indicating a weak to moderate glial reaction.

    Notes: Abstract The finite-temperature density functional approach is applied for the first time to calculate thermal properties of the valence electron system in metal clusters using the spherical jellium model. Both the canonical and the grand canonical formalism are applied and their differences are discussed. We study the temperature dependence of the total free energyF(N) (including a contribution from the ionic jellium background) for spherical neutral clusters containingN atoms. We investigate, in particular, its first and second differences, Δ1 F =F (N − 1) −F (N) and Δ2 F =F(N + 1) +F(N − 1) − 2F(N), and discuss their possible relevance for the understanding of the mass abundance spectra observed in cluster production experiments. We show that the typical enhancement of magic spherical-shell clusters withN=8, 20, 34, 40, 58, 92, 138, 186, 254, 338, 398, 440, 508, 612..., most of which are well established experimentally, is decreasing rather fast with increasing temperatureT and cluster sizeN. We also present electronic entropies and specific heats of spherical neutral clusters. The Koopmans theorem and related approximations for calculating Δ1 F and Δ2 F atT 〉 0 are discussed.
