    Notes: Abstract The optical and structural properties of films deposited from laser sintered Zirconia (ZrO2), Hafnia (HfO2), and Yttria (Y2O3) and from the commercially available (unprocessed material) Zirconia, Hafnia and Yttria, were studied and compared. All the films had low absorption. Films deposited from the laser sintered material had very low optical inhomogeneity. ZrO2 films showed negative inhomogeneity for films deposited from the unprocessed material. The refractive index increased for ZrO2 films deposited from the laser sintered material. HfO2 and Y2O3 films showed positive inhomogeneity when deposited from the unprocessed material. The refractive index of the films of these materials decreased when deposited from the laser sintered material. The thin films of ZrO2 and Y2O3 prepared from laser sintered material had stable monoclinic and cubic structures respectively while HfO2 films were found to be amorphous.

    Notes: Abstract Emission rates of reduced sulfur gases from vegetation and soils were measured in various regions of the United States during the summer of 1985. The predominant sulfur gases emitted were hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide and dimethylsulfide. Typically, vegetative (forests, crops, etc.) emission fluxes varied between approximately 10 and 60 ng S m-2 min-1. Biogenic sulfur fluxes from mollisol and histisol soils averaged 15 and 217 ng S m-2 min-1, respectively. Salt water marsh fluxes with a geometric mean of 293 ng S m-2 min-1 were the highest measured. These biogenic sulfur fluxes are somewhat lower than those measured during the SURE study at some of the same sites. The natural sulfur emission fluxes reported herein together with those data included in the two accompanying manuscripts provide the basis for developing a national inventory of reduced sulfur emissions from soils, crops and trees. When combined these data also will provide a foundation for deriving uncertainty limits associated with these flux estimates.

Um ein etwa vorhandenes stabiles Poloniumisotop aufzufinden, wurden größere Mengen der Tellurminerale: Hessit, Calaverit, Nagyagit und der Wismutminerale: Wismuttellurid, Wismutglanz und metallisches Wismut aufgearbeitet unter Verwendung von Polonium als Indikator. Das Polonium wurde der Lösung der Minerale zugesetzt und am Ende der Aufarbeitung wieder abgeschieden. Ein etwa vorhandenes, stabiles Poloniumisotop hätte sich gemeinsam mit dem Polonium ausgeschieden. Es zeigte sich jedoch, daß der das gesamte Polonium enthaltende Niederschlag nur etwa 1/10 mg Gewicht hatte und wie eine röntgenspektroskopische Untersuchung ergab, auch dieser Niederschlag weniger als 1% des gesuchten Elementes enthielt. Daraus folgt, daß die untersuchten Tellur- und Wismutminerale, in denen ein etwaiges stabiles Poloniumisotop hätte vorhanden sein müssen, kein solches Element enthalten, d. h. pro Gramm Mineral ist weniger als 10-11 g des gesuchten Elementes vorhanden.2. Es ist eine Methode ausgearbeitet worden, um Polonium chemisch und elektrolytisch von großen Mengen von Fremdsubstanzen, insbesondere Tellur und Wismut zu trennen.3. Eine systematische Untersuchung der elektrolytischen Abscheidung an verschiedenen Metallen ergab die günstigsten Ergebnisse bei Verwendung von Molybdän als Elektrodenmaterial.

    Notes: Activation energies of suspended and immobilized nitrifying bacteria were determined and compared to determine if diffusion limitation results in decreased sensitivity for temperature. The activation energy for the respiration activity of suspended Nitrosomonas europaea and Nitrobacter agilis was found to be 86.4 and 58.4 kJ mol-1, respectively. The activation energy for oxygen diffusion in the support material, κ-carrageenan, determined from the effect of temperature on the effective diffusion coefficient (D), was 17.2 kJ mol-1. Consequently, the apparent actvation energy of diffusion limited cells should be lower. It was indeed shown that due to the effect of diffusion limitation and to temperature effects on the Monod constant Ks, the immobilized-cell activity was less sensitive to temperature. The apparent activation energy for immobilized Ns. europaea was between 28.6 and 94.2 kJ mol-1 and for immobilized Nb. agilis between 1.4 and 72.9 kJ mol-1, depending on the oxygen concentration and temperature. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
