Notes: Abstract For the first time directly measured elastic tensor components of C36H74 single crystals are presented as a function of temperature. The data are compared to theoretical results obtained for polyethylene.

Notes: Abstract Investigations of polarized Raman spectra of orthorhombic betaine fumarate crystals revealed the existence of two low-frequency optic modes which soften slightly on approaching the ferroelastic transition temperatureT c ≈194 K. The eigenvectors of these modes withB 1g -andB 2g -symmetry, respectively, are coupled bilinearly to strains of corresponding symmetries leading to renormalized elastic moduli. It is shown that these couplings account quantitatively for the temperature dependences of the modulic 55andc 66and eventually lead to a ferroelastic transition and a spontaneous shear straine 5s .By optical and dielectric measurements it is confirmed that the transition is of second order and follows a classical Landau behaviour with a critical exponent of the order parameter of 0.5 within experimental error.

Notes: Abstract General aspects of high performance Brillouin spectroscopy in polymers using special scattering geometries such as 90A-scattenng geometry are discussed. Technical improvements are reported resulting in absolute accuracies up to 0.05 % for sound velocity determination. A method of data analysis is presented delivering simultaneously the complete set of elastic stiffness constants. The influence of birefringence on the Brillouin line shifts in anisotropic polymeric systems is estimated and techniques to reduce this influence are proposed. The determination of the principal refractive indices by Brillouin spectroscopy is discussed. Furthermore, a quantityD X , which is sensitive to hypersonic relaxation processes, is introduced.
