Notes: Summary We found a left superficial ulnar artery in the cadaver of a Japanese woman. This anomalous vessel originated from the brachial artery at a site 55 mm distal to the inferior border of the teres major muscle and medial to the median nerve, ran downward and medially superficial to the forearm flexor muscles, and then downward to enter the hand. It formed superficial and deep palmar arches with the radial artery. The clinical importance of the anomalous ulnar artery is discussed.

Notes: Summary During diapause O2 consumption in fly pupae is a cyclic event (4-day periodicity at 25°C) driven by cycles of juvenile hormone activity. Levels of juvenile hormone esterase activity change systematically during the cycle, with highest activity observed at the nadir of the O2 consumption cycle.

Notes: Summary Short-winged forms of the bug, Jadera aeola, were discovered during the late dry season at a study site on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. They were smaller than long-winged adults not only in elytron and hindwing sizes but also in head, thorax, rostrum and hind femur dimentions. When newly emerged adults were kept under natural photothermal conditions, short-winged females started ovipositing earlier, produced more eggs, and died earlier than did long-winged females. This was partly due to the fact that long-winged adults usually enter diapause after adult energence (Tanaka et al. 1987b). Egg size was another factor contributing to the high egg production in the short-winged form; it was significantly smaller in the short-winged form than that in the long-winged form. Wing form was apparently environmentally induced because all off-spring of short-winged adults became long-winged. No short-winged form was obtained in the laboratory when nymphs were reared on different species of seeds at different photoperiods. Although the factor(s) responsible for determination of the wing form remains unknown, the ecological significance of this short-winged form seems clear, i.e. exploitation of the food resource left in the late dry season. Wing length dimorphism in J. aeola could be a response to unpredictable availability of the food resource determined by seed production of the host plants (Sapindaceae) and by the timing of the onset of a wet season.

Notes: Summary Flesh flies (Sarcophagidae) collected in Costa Rica and Panama lack the pupal diapause that is characteristic of flesh flies from the temperate zone and tropical Africa. The absence of a diapause capacity in the neotropical species correlates with several other life history traits: in most species the post feeding wandering phase of the third larval instar is longer and duration is more variable, adult life is longer, clutch size is smaller, and more clutches are produced. Among species that have the capacity for diapause, risk is invested primarily in the diapausing stage and other life stages are brief. Though diapausing species are short-lived, they produce as many or more progeny than nondiapausing species by increasing clutch size. The slower and more variable developmental rate and increased adult longevity desynchronizes development and permits the nondiapausing species to spread an environmental risk over different stages of the life cycle, thus offering an alternative to diapause. Other traits such as body size, developmental velocity, thermal constant thresholds, thermal constants, age at first reproduction, and the interval between clutches do not appear related to the capacity for diapause.

Notes: Abstract Images were obtained both with a biliary agent, 99mTc-Sn-N-pyridoxyl-5-methyltryptophan (99mTc-PMT), and with 67Ga-citrate in 40 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma and in 43 cases of other hepatic diseases and results were compared. Positive results were obtained by delayed 99mTc-PMT imaging in 25 (63%) of 40 cases of hepatoma: the hepatic tumor showed increased uptake in 18 cases (45%) and equilibrated uptake in 7 cases (18%). Positive 67Ga-citrate imaging was found in 28 (70%) of the 40 cases of hepatoma: increased uptake was seen in 24 cases (60%) and equilibrated uptake in 4 cases (10%). Of 15 cases of hepatoma giving negative results in the 99mTc-PMT study, 7 cases (47%) took up 67Ga-citrate, and 6 of these showed increased 67Ga-citrate uptake by the hepatic tumors. A certain relation existed between the degree of histological differentiation of hepatomas and the intensity of 99mTc-PMT uptake by those tumors, while such a histological correlation was denied for 67Ga-citrate uptake by the tumors. Delayed 99mTc-PMT imaging is preferable to 67Ga-citrate imaging for increasing the specificity of diagnosis of hepatoma. 67Ga-citrate should be used in those cases that do not give positive results with 99mTc-PMT.

Notes: Abstract During the last 2 years, eight patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who were suspected of having distant metastases have been studied to determine whether a new biliary agent, 99mTc-Sn-N-pyridoxyl-5-methyltryptophan (99mTc-PMT), is taken up by extrahepatic tumors. In all eight patients, scintigrams showed a clearly increased uptake of 99mTc-PMT radioactivity by the extrahepatic tumors. In contrast, an increased uptake by the tumors of gallium citrate Ga 67 was only detected in four of the seven patients examined. The results obtained in this study suggest that 99mTc-PMT is useful both for characterizing the nature of extrahepatic tumors in patients with hepatoma and for detecting the metastases.

Notes: Field desorption mass spectrometry (FDMS) was applied to the study of the initiation mechanism of thermal polymerization of styrenes. The FD mass spectrum was measured for a cooligomer of α,α,β-trideuterostyrene and p-methoxystyrene produced by thermal polymerization using ethylbenzene as a solvent, and this was compared with the spectrum of an oligomer of p-methoxystyrene. The above two FD mass spectra showed characteristic differences, depending upon the number of hydrogen and deuterium atoms and upon the presence or absence of the methoxy group, in the oligomers. Molecular species observed in the spectra were identified based on these considerations. As a result, we could distinguish the “true trimer” produced from three monomers from the “cross trimer” produced from fragments of five monomers. It was found that the “true trimer” was the major constituent in the trimer region, and that the “true trimer” was produced mainly by the cage reaction between initiating radicals.

Notes: The advancing contact angle of water on plastic film coatings on metal was measured against both the air and the metal side surfaces after their being peeled off from the metal substrate. The plastic used was a methacrylate copolymer, and it was baked on cadmium, aluminum, nickel, iron, and gold. Contact angle for the air side was about 74° at 25°C. for all metals, but the values on the metal side differed considerably, ranging from 76° for gold to 50° for cadmium. At the same time the static breaking strengths of the same films were investigated by applying a knife-edge vertically to the film with increasing load and measuring the weight at which the electric resistance through the film became zero. Increasing film thickness gave increasing strength, but further thickening made the film weaker with a tendency for crack formation. The film-metal combinations of larger contact angle difference generally also showed the higher breaking strength.

Notes: Field desorption mass spectra of normal and deuterated styrene oligomers synthesized in several alkylbenzenes were measured. Analysis of the mechanism of thermal oligomerization was carried out by identifying the molecular species in the reaction system using field desorption mass spectra. As a result, the existence of several kinds of molecular species was confirmed. The minor molecular species originated from dissolved oxygen, from the cleavage of solvent radicals to which oxygen was attached, or from H-D exchange in the oligomerization of deuterated styrene. The major molecular species originated from radical telomerization of solvents and styrene dimers, from the recombination termination reaction, and from the cage reaction between initiating radicals. Field desorption mass spectrometry was found to be useful for analyzing the mechanism of styrene oligomerization as well as characterizing the oligomers.
