    Notes: Summary Flesh flies (Sarcophagidae) collected in Costa Rica and Panama lack the pupal diapause that is characteristic of flesh flies from the temperate zone and tropical Africa. The absence of a diapause capacity in the neotropical species correlates with several other life history traits: in most species the post feeding wandering phase of the third larval instar is longer and duration is more variable, adult life is longer, clutch size is smaller, and more clutches are produced. Among species that have the capacity for diapause, risk is invested primarily in the diapausing stage and other life stages are brief. Though diapausing species are short-lived, they produce as many or more progeny than nondiapausing species by increasing clutch size. The slower and more variable developmental rate and increased adult longevity desynchronizes development and permits the nondiapausing species to spread an environmental risk over different stages of the life cycle, thus offering an alternative to diapause. Other traits such as body size, developmental velocity, thermal constant thresholds, thermal constants, age at first reproduction, and the interval between clutches do not appear related to the capacity for diapause.

    Description / Table of Contents: Samenvatting De paringsactiviteit van in massa gekweekte motten werd met behulp van spermatoforenonderzoek (Fig. 1) vergeleken met die van als volwassen rups of pop buiten verzamelde motten (Tabel 1). Hieruit werden aanwijzingen verkregen dat de paringsactiviteit der gekweekte dieren circa de helft was van die van de uit het veld afkomstige. Er werd geen effect van bestraling op de paringsactiviteit gevonden. Wel bleken motten die slechts één generatie in het laboratorium waren gehouden, geen betere paringsactiviteit te hebben dan de reeds sinds 1965 in het laboratorium gekweekte stam. Geen aanwijzing werd verkregen dat het tussen de gekweekte dieren en ‘veld-dieren’ bestaande gewichtsverschil (popgewicht resp. 23,1 mg en 16,4 mg) de oorzaak was van het verschil in gedrag. Het waarschijnlijkst lijkt een dieeteffect.
    Notes: Abstract Mating competitiveness of an inbred irradiated, mass reared strain ofAdoxophyes was approximately half that of males collected as nearly fullgrown larvae or pupae in the field. This reduction was not caused by irradiation effects. No indications of genetic inferiority of the laboratory strain were found since the difference in competitiveness disappeared after wild moths were reared for one generation on artificial diet. A diet effect on competitiveness seems most likely.

    Notes: Abstract When pharate adults of the flesh fly Sarcophaga crassipalpis are exposed to 40°C for 4 h they become more tolerant of high temperatures that are normally lethal (thermotolerance). In contrast, a 1-h exposure to 45°C decreases tolerance to a subsequent high temperature challenge (thermosensitivity). While control flies experience little mortality when held at 35°C for 24–48 h the thermosensitized flies die when exposed to 35°C. Sensitivity to a second thermal challenge slowly decays over a 72-h period. The acquisition of thermotolerance prevents the development of thermosensitivity. Brains from thermosensitized flies cultured at 43°C express the 72-kDa heat-shock protein and normal protein synthesis is inhibited. This implies that development of thermosensitivity is not associated with a loss in the capacity to express the 72-kDa heat-shock protein.
