    Notes: Summary We report the post-mortem findings of the case of a 31-year-old male who, through sexual contacts with a female drug addict, was found to be HIV-positive and developed the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) 2 years later. He was treated for various opportunistic infections over the next 7 years when he presented with cardiac abnormalities and multiple cerebral lesions which were responsible for his death. The results revealedAspergillus fumigatus endocarditis and myocarditis with mycotic thromboembolic extension to the brain, spleen, kidney and pancreas. We review the literature ofAspergillus infection in patients with AIDS and more specifically cardiac involvement with this pathogen.

    Notes: The thermal degradation in vacuum of a number of fluorine-containing polymers has been studied by using a weight loss technique. The relative thermal stabilities of the different polymers have been determined and where possible the overall activation energy and frequency factors for their breakdown. The methods of assessment of the weight loss results are discussed. The most stable of the polymers are those which are fully fluorinated.

    Notes: The thermal degradation in oxygen of a number of fluorine-containing polymers has been studied by using a weight loss technique. The relative thermal stabilities of the different polymers have been determined and, where possible, the overall activation energy and frequency factors for their breakdown. The results have been compared with those for samples of the same polymers degraded in vacuum. There is little change in the relative thermal stabilities observed under both conditions, the fully fluorinated structures being the most stable. The changes in the rates of breakdown in the presence of oxygen are difficult to interpret in the absence of mechanistic information.

    Notes: The thermal degradation in vacuum of a number of halogenated poly(phenylene oxide) polymers has been studied by a weight loss method. In general the thermal stability decreased as the degree of substitution in the phenylene nuclei increased. The chloro derivatives were relatively more stable than the corresponding bromo derivatives. The majority of the polymers showed an initial rapid loss in weight followed by the formation of a highly stable residue. The good thermal stability of the simpler poly(phenylene oxides), coupled with their fusibility and solubility, indicate that they may be useful starting products for the preparation of practical materials.

    Notes: The migration and orientation of human gingival fibroblasts in relation to the rim of smooth-surfaced and porous-coated titanium discs placed on multilayers in vitro was investigated. Samples were examined after 6 h, 24 h, 3 days, and 7 days of culture using phase-contrast and scanning electron microscopy. The cells migrated from the multilayer onto the smooth-surfaced discs forming bridges between them, and orientated along parallel circumferential grooves in the rim of the discs. This resulted in the cellular bridges orientating at an acute angle to the rim of the disc, and adjacent cells in the multilayer orientating parallel to the rim. Cellular bridges were also formed between the porous-coated discs and the multilayer but, because the cells that migrated onto, and between, the spheres of the porous-coat showed no preferred orientation, the bridges retained their orientation at right angles to the surface of the rim. This in turn resulted in the cells of the adjacent multilayer becoming similarly orientated. These observations suggest that the geometrical configuration of the surface of implants could influence whether a capsule or an orientated fibrous attachment is developed in relation to implants in vivo.

    Notes: Raman spectrophotometry was used to determine the various phases of cobalt silicide formed during rapid thermal annealing of cobalt films deposited onto silicon (100) substrates. The samples were prepared by depositing a 600 ÅR cobalt film and then letting the reaction occur in a nitrogen ambient. Annealing was done for 20 s at temperatures ranging from 200 to 1000°C. The unreacted cobalt film was removed from the surface for the Raman spectrophotometric study. The initial phase, characterized as Co2Si, formed at 250°C. Two subsequent phases, CoSi and CoSi2, were identified as forming at 300 and 500°C, respectively. The corresponding three Raman peaks appeared at 204, 306 and 515.3 Δcm-1, respectively. These peaks appeared and disappeared in accordance with the phase change in the film. The co-existence of the two initial phases, Co2Si and CoSi, at temperatures near 300°C was also evidenced by Raman spectrophtometry. The Raman data correlated well with Auger electron spectroscopic depth profiles.
