    Notes: Summary The microbial activity at the soil-root interface (rhizosphere) of barley was examined using a rhizobox system. In this system, the soil was placed in several compartments separated from each other by a 500-mesh nylon cloth. Plants were grown in the central compartment and after a 2-month growing period the roots were still confined to this compartment. The soil from each compartment was then analyzed for ATP, NO3 /−, total N, total C and CO2 production. The increase in ATP concentration was found in a range of 4 mm around the roots. The ATP content and CO2 production across the rhizosphere were correlated in all the soils used, but changes in NO3 − were not correlated with ATP changes. The range of NO3 − change was wider than that of the ATP change, indicating that NO3 − production is not influenced by the biological activity in the rhizosphere.

    Notes: Abstract Pure phloem sap was collected from insects feeding on rice (Oryza sativa L.) leaves by a laser technique similar to the aphid stylet technique. Rapid circulation of nitrogen in the sieve tubes was demonstrated directly using 15N as a tracer. Application to the roots of the metabolic inhibitors of amino acids, aminooxyacetate and methioninesulfoximine, changed the amino acid composition in the sieve tubes. Feeding methionine to leaf tips resulted in its bulk transfer into the sieve tubes. In vitro experiments confirmed the existence of protein kinases in the pure rice phloem sap. The phosphorylation status of the sieve tube sap proteins was affected by the light regime. The possibility that changes in chemical composition or protein modification such as phosphorylation in the sieve tubes might affect plant growth are discussed. Analysis of pure phloem sap collected from rice plants by insect laser technique has shown dynamic changes in the chemical composition and the quality of proteins in the sap.

    Notes: Abstract The reason why young rice plant is highly susceptible to Fe-deficiency was clarified as follows: Among Gramineae plants rice secreted a very low amount of deoxy-MA as a phytosiderophore even under Fe-deficiency, and the secretion by rice ceased within 10 days under Fe-deficiency although barley secreted MAs during a period of more than one month. When iron depletion continued, the rice root tips become chimeric and epidermal cells became necrotic. The mitochondrial membrane systems in the cortex cells were also severely damaged. Iron starvation occurred even in the mitochondria, and energy charge in the root decreased. This reduced energy charge has firstly diminished the secretion activity of deoxy-MA from the roots, secondly reduced the activity of the transporter which absorb deoxy-MA-FeIII chelate and finally reduced the synthesis of deoxy-MA from metionine. Consequently, the depletion of FeII in the shoot was induced and severe chlorosis rapidly developed in the young rice plant under Fe-deficiency.
