    Notes: Abstract ECP31, an embryogenic-cell protein from carrot (Daucus carota L.), was purified by sequential column-chromatographic steps and digested by V8 protease on a nitrocellulose membrane. The resultant peptides were separated by reverse-phased column chromatography and sequenced. The sequences obtained were 70–80% homologous to those of a late-embryogenesis-abundant protein (D34) from cotton (Baker et al, 1988, Plant Mol. Biol. 11, 227–291). The level of ECP31 in somatic embryos of carrot was increased by treatment of the embryos with 3.7 · 10−6 M abscisic acid (ABA) for 48 h, and there was no change in this enhanced level for up to 192 h in the presence of ABA. No similar enhancing effect of ABA was observed on the level of ECP31 in embryogenic callus or segments of carrot hypocotyls. In an immunohistochemical analysis, ECP31 was found in epidermal tissue and in the vascular system of ABA-treated somatic embryos.

    Notes: Summary To clarify that the presence of Ri T-DNA genes are not prerequisite for the light-induced bud formation in horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) hairy roots, leaf and root segments of nontransformed horseradish plants were used as explants. Bud formation from nontransformed tissues was observed in hormone-free medium under 16 h daylight conditions, but not under continuous darkness. To investigate the effects of growth regulators on bud formation, leaf and root explants were treated with auxin (1-naphthaleneacetic acid; NAA) and / or cytokinin (6-benzyl-aminopurine; BA). The most effective treatment in the dark to stimulate bud formation was BA at 1 mg·1-1. These results show that adventitious bud formation in horseradish can be induced by light and growth regulators, and especially cytokinin, may be involved in bud formation, irrespective of whether the tissues were transformed with Ri T-DNA.

    Notes: Abstract An action spectrum was determined for lightinduced formation of adventitious shoots in hairy roots of horseradish (Armoracia rusticana Gaert., Mey. et Scherb.) cultured in vitro. Near ultraviolet (350–400 nm), blue (440–460 nm) and red light (600–680 nm) were most effective in inducing formation of adventitious buds. Farred light (730 nm) inhibited the promotive effect of all three wavelength regions. These results are consistent with induction by phytochrome(s) of adventitious shoots in hairy roots of horseradish.

    Notes: Abstract Among primary lacrimal gland tumors, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is the most common malignant epithelial neoplasm; it is characterized by local intracranial invasion. A case with unusual dumbbell-type intracranial extension representing cavernous sinus syndrome is described. A 49-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with right cavernous sinus syndrome. Computerized tomographic (CT) scans and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated well-enhanced intraorbital and middle fossa tumors mimicking multifocal mass lesions. Operative findings revealed an ACC originating from the lacrimal gland and extending into the right cavernous sinus and middle fossa along the nerve sheath in the superior orbital fissure. Although MR image findings of intracranial ACC often resemble the image findings for meningiomas, intracranial ACC is very aggressive in comparison with meningioma. It is best treated surgically and aggressively.
