Notes: Abstract The activity for the production of methane in the hydrogenation of carbon oxides has been measured over rare earth oxide (Ln = La, Ce, Sm, Yb, Lu) promoted Rh/Al2O3 catalysts in a fixed bed flow reactor at atmospheric pressure. The catalyst structures have been determined by EXAFS experiments at the K edge of the rhodium metal. From the EXAFS data it is concluded that the average coordination number of rhodium depends on the rare earth cation used as promoter. The Rh average coordination number follows the trend obtained from CO chemisorption data. The correlation of the activity results with the structural data demonstrates that the activity towards methane production decreases on increasing the metal dispersion, this being the main effect the promoter causes on the rhodium catalyst.

Notes: Abstract We have treated 30 patients with flail chest, with priority given to associated factors (pain, secretions retention, hemo-/pneumothorax and underlying pulmonary contusion). When this treatment was insufficient IMV+PEEP was instituted; in this group there was a 58.8% incidence of pneumonia, 47.5% of sepsis and 11.7 days average stay in the ICU. These were significantly different when compared to the patients controlled without mechanical ventilatory support (7.7% pneumonia, 0% sepsis, 3.2 days). Surgical fixation was limited to 4 patients who presented with multiple and greatly displaced rib fractures, which made fixation by mechanical ventilation unpredictable.

Notes: Summary Acetylator phenotype has been determined with sulphamethazine (sulphadimidine) in 69 Spanish patients with rheumatoid arthritis (48 females), all of whom were on second line therapy, and in 96 age-matched normal controls (54 females). Thirty-two patients (46.4%) and 56 controls (58.3%) were classified as slow acetylators. On analysing separately the females in both groups, 37.5% of patients and 63% of controls were found to be slow acetylators. No difference was found in the males (patients 66.3% and controls 52.4% slow acetylators). Rapid acetylator phenotype may be a risk factor for the development of severe rheumatoid arthritis in women.
