Notes: Abstract Male-sterile chicory plants were obtained by fusion of chicory mesophyll protoplasts and hypocotyl protoplasts derived from male-sterile sunflower plants. The protoplasts of both species were fused by the PEG method and the products were selected manually and cultivated at very low density in a liquid medium. Three to twenty percent of the heterokaryocytes divided and evolved into microcalli, then into calli where budding could be induced. The mitochondrial genome of ten male-sterile or totally sterile plants was studied. Restriction endonuclease profiles of mitochondrial DNA and molecular hybridization with specific genes of the mitochondrial genome used as probes indicated that mitochondrial DNA rearrangement had occurred between sunflower and chicory and the intensity of the rearrangements correlated with the degree of sterility of the different plants.

Notes: Summary Fusions of chicory leaf protoplasts were realized in order to obtain a higher number of tetraploid plants compared to the traditional doubling techniques with colchicine. Thanks to the fusion technique, using a mixture of PEG, DMSO and a solution of CaCl2 (pH 10.5), 25% tetraploid (2n=36) plants were obtained. Among the 167 regenerated plants, only one aneuploid of a near tetraploid level (2n=33) was identified.

Notes: Summary The gas chromatographic selectivity of K+, Zn2+, Ag+, Ni2+, and Cd2+ forms of a cation exchange packing have been determined for a set of 44 C2 to C8 alkenes. The retention characteristics of each ion are broken down into electronic (charge-transfer) and steric effects associated with the alkene sub-populations of each carbon number. Almost every pair of alkenes tested can be separated on at least one of these packings. Retention is much stronger on the ion exchangers than on metal-ion containing packings in gas-liquid chromatography, even with shorter columns and higher temperatures.

Notes: Thermal Aqueous Liquid Chromatography (TALC) using pure water as a mobile phase should be a very attractive technique promoting the use of liquid chromatography in routine analysis, either in the laboratory or in future on-line process control. This simple form of chromatography, the selectivity of which depends on the fixed phase only, would allow the use of flame ionization as an almost universal, low-cost detector in liquid chromatography. The potential of the TALC technique is illustrated by selected examples.

Description / Table of Contents: Polymerization of acetoxy-2 styrene, parachloro acetoxy-2 styrene, paramethyl acetoxy-2 styrene and paranitro acetoxy-2 styrene was carried out by means of free radical initiators or by thermic reaction. The polymers therefrom showed molecular weights of about 200 000. Studies on the thermal behaviour reveal that these polymers do not undergo any change of phase, either vitreous or crystalline. Dielectric experiments show losses of about 10-3 radian; the losses are practically constant within a large scale of temperature and frequency. Over 320°K one notices a relaxation process of small magnitude and the presence of water brings about a marked change in the way the polymer reacts to dielectric treatment.

Notes: The polarized or depolarized light scattering by well-defined monodispersed sphere doublets is investigated. Two configurations of doublets are studied. In the first (at rest) the doublets are randomly oriented in a plane, in the second the doublets are oriented in a preferred direction. This is achieved by submitting a suspension of doublets to a shear flow. The scattering patterns are compared to two theoretical predictions based on simplified geometries. In the first approach, the doublet is approximated by two interpenetrating spheres scattering independently, whereas in the second, an ellipsoid geometry is used. A good qualitative comparison is obtained. However, the HV and VH patterns of a randomly dispersed suspension are not similar. The observation of the flow of a doublet suspension in shear shows that the doublets are spiraling around the vorticity axis. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Water-borne enzymatic coating-based dry chemistries have been used for more than 20 years, especially by diabetics, for self-monitoring of blood glucose. Until now, it has been believed that enzymes work only in water and not in organic solvents. Synthesis of a hydroxylated acrylic polymer and the novel concept of dispersing enzymes have enabled us to design nonaqueous diagnostic coatings. These coating films gave excellent dose response and dynamic range. Additionally, these coatings can easily be ranged by a wide variety of antioxidants. In contrast, water-borne coatings are extremely difficult to range. Furthermore, nonaqueous coating films produce color signals that are independent of the reaction time with excellent thermal stability. Molecular forces and thermodynamical considerations have been used to explain the performance of the new dry chemistries. An organic reaction mechanism of ranging has also been proposed for the nonaqueous system. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The time-resolved resonance Raman spectrum (excitation: 532 nm, 30 ns laser pulse; optical multichannel detection) of the short-lived species generated by UV flash irradiation of a benzooxazolinic spiropyran in toluene or benzene, has been obtained. The CW resonance Raman spectrum of a related permanent benzooxazolinic merocyanine closely resembles the spectrum of the transient species. A tentative assignment of the Raman bands is proposed in order to characterize the bonds directly involved in the π-electron delocalization of the merocyanines.
