    Notes: Summary Poly(vinyl oxazoline ester) and poly(stearyl methacrylate) were found to be good alien polymers for grafting of methyl methacrylate by suspension polymerization whereas poly(tridecyl methacrylate) was not a good backbone. Azobisisobutyronitrile was found to be an inefficient grafting initiator where azocumene that produces highly resonance and hyperconjugated stabilized dimethyl phenyl methyl radical was a superior initiator to benzoyl peroxide for grafting. Poly(stearyl methacrylate) was found to be a suitable polymeric stabilizer for nonaqueous suspension polymerizations.

    Notes: Abstract This research investigated diallyl phthalate encapsulating resins as a replacement for the moisture sensitive epoxies now used in light emitting diode (LED) displays. Consideration of display resin requirements led us to select for study the diallyl phthalate (DAP) polymer thermosetting system, which had most of the performance properties desired, but was excessively brittle. Flexibilizing co-monomers were evaluated including both vinyl and allylic types. A promising co-polymer of DAP with lauryl methacrylate (80/20) was defined that had most of the physical and performance characteristics desired, plus attractive inherent light diffusing properties. Allylic co-monomers such as diallyl adipate and triallyl citrate also formed interesting co-polymers and ter-polymers with DAP. DAP/ epoxy interpenetrating polymer networks were also explored and found to be most suitable for LED application.

    Notes: Abstract An ultraviolet (UV) screening agent precursor, dinonylphenylisophthalate, applied as a component of a surface coating on instant colour positive photographic prints stabilizes the dyes that are used and prevents the fading of colour that otherwise occurs. It is believed that upon exposure to UV light the ester precursor rearrangesin situ to form substituted benzophenones, which are effective UV screening agents. Eastman Kodak instant colour prints protected by this system successfully resisted prolonged exposure to high intensity UV light. Under the same conditions, unprotected controls showed extensive fading and other changes in colour. Extension of the general technology to prevent colour fading of dyes in other applications is foreseen.

    Notes: A model for simulating the process of mould filling in castings is presented. Many defects in a casting have their origins at the filling stage. Numerical simulation of this process can be of immense practical benefit to the foundry industry, however a rigorous analysis of this process must model a wide range of complex physical phenomena. In order to contain the costs and complexity that would be necessary for such a model, certain simplifying assumptions have been made. These assumptions limit the scope of this model to only predicting realistic thermal fields during the filling process.A laminar regime has been assumed for the flow field, which is obtained by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using a velocity-pressure segregated semi-implicit finite element method. The free metal surface is predicted by advecting a pseudo-concentration function via the computed flow field. This involves an explicit finite element solution of a pure advection equation. The thermal field is calculated by solving the convective-diffusive energy equation by an explicit finite element method using the computed flow field and the location of the free surface. All the advection terms are discretized using a Taylor-Galerkin method. The interface between the metal and mould is modelled using special interface elements.The model is demonstrated by solving practical example problems. The results show that a sharp thermal front is maintained during the course of filling without excessive diffusion. The heat diffusion in the mould can be controlled by varying the metal mould heat transfer coefficient.

    Notes: The problem of phase change in the presence of natural convection has been investigated. A model has been proposed based on the treatment of the release/absorption of latent heat as a heat source/sink in combination with the standard Galerkin finite element method with a primitive variable formulation on a fixed grid. To demonstrate the capabilities of the model, three cases of phase change of an aluminium alloy in the presence of natural convection arc considered, i.e. solidification, melting and combined solidification and melting. The solidification of water in a square cavity is modelled as another example, taking into account the density extremum, and the results are compared with a previously published work.

    Notes: Open-pore urea/formaldehyde (OPUF) structure has been prepared electrolytically at the anode from an aqueous solution of a nonetherified urea/formaldehyde resin. A decrease in pH at the anode due to an electrochemical reaction results in the formation of the open-pore structure. The electrolytically generated OPUF powder has the same characteristics as the chemically prepared OPUF obtained by acidification of urea/formaldehyde resin solution.
