Notes: Summary Seventeen patients with clinically diagnosed Alzheimer's disease and 13 healthy age-matched controls were studied by means of computed tomography (CT). To assess cerebral atrophy, regional volumetric measurements and parenchymal density measurements were performed. The results indicate that: (1) Alzheimer patients show diffuse cerebral atrophy in the early stage; (2) the evaluation of lobar atrophy by means of CT is useful for the clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease; (3) the evaluation of parenchymal density by means of CT is not as sensitive as the evaluation of lobar atrophy.

Notes: Summary Computed tomography (CT) was used to study cerebral atrophy in 18 patients with clinically diagnosed Alzheimer's disease of presenile type and in 14 healthy age-matched subjects as controls. Using the computerized planimetric method, Subarachnoid Space Volume Index and Ventricle Volume Index were calculated as the measure of cortical atrophy and ventricular dilatation respectively. From the results the following conclusions were drawn: 1. The cerebral atrophy in Alzheimer patients could be attributable to the disease processes rather than to physiological aging of the brain. 2. The degree of atrophy increases in parallel with the progress of the clinical stage, and the cortical atrophy is already apparent at an early stage, whereas the ventricular dilatation becomes pronounced at later stages. 3. CT could be one of the most useful clinical tests available for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Notes: Dynamic light scattering (DLS) has been used to explore the properties of asymmetric styrene-isoprene (SI) block copolymers in concentrated solutions. Concentrations were always well below those necessary to access the order-disorder transition in neutral good solvents. The samples include SI (10-50), SI (36-9), and SIS (10-100-10), where the numerical suffixes denote the block molecular weights in kilodaltons; experimental emphasis was placed on SI (10-50). The DLS intensity correlation functions in the neutral good solvents, THF and toluene, were dominated by a slow mode that first appeared at a concentration c+ ≈ 4 c*, where c* is the coil overlap concentration. The decay rate of this mode scaled approximately as the third power of the scattering wavevector, and the excess scattered intensity decreased with increased scattering angle. These results were tentatively ascribed to the onset of substantial concentration fluctuations, that exhibited cylindrical, or wormlike structures. Measurements in solvents of known selectivity, dioxane and cyclohexane, and on a copolymer of the opposite composition, SI (36-9), indicated that the intermolecular association was driven by the effectively repulsive interactions between styrene and isoprene segments, rather than by solvent selectivity. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Monodispersed polystyrene (PS) latices of the particle size ranging between 4 and 10 μm were prepared by a conventional dispersion polymerization technique using poly-(acrylamide) as a stabilizer. Styrene containing 2-20% of divinyl benzene (DVB) was subsequently polymerized on the surface of the latex by a seeded polymerization technique for the purpose of modifying the thermo-mechanical and chemical properties of the microspheres. The softening temperature during hot pressing and the resistance against the dissolution on swelling in toluene or methyl ethyl ketone increased with increasing amount of DVB. The state of seeded polymerized particles was revealed to depend more on the total amount than the composition of the monomer added. By using the present technique, it is possible to prepare chemically stable, monodispersed microspheres with their diameters and softening temperature varying from 4.5 to 12 μm and from 106 to 126°C, respectively, with a free combination by choosing the appropriate dispersion polymerization condition and the amount of DVB during subsequent seeded polymerization.

Notes: Poly-2-(2-azido-5-nitrobenzoyloxy)ethylmethacrylate (P-II-A) and poly-2-(4-azido-3-nitrobenzoyloxy)ethylmethacrylate (P-II-B) were synthesized from the reactions of 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate with 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzoic acid and 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzoic acid, respectively, by substitution reactions of sodium azide with the corresponding chloronitrobenzoyl group. In addition, the degradation reaction of the 2-azido-5-nitrobenzoyl group in P-II-A and the transformation of the 4-azido-3-nitrobenzoyl group to 5-carboxylbenzofurazane-1-oxide ring in P-II-B by irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) light or by heating were investigated in detail. In the photochemical reaction the reaction of the azide group in P-II-A was affected by the presence of a spacer in the polymer chain. Moreover, in the thermochemical reaction the rates of the reactions of azide groups in P-II-A and P-II-B were controlled by the facility of molecular motion and the conformation of polymer chains.
