    Notes: Summary Nitrosourea induced tumors of the nervous system in rats have proven useful for biochemical studies combined with morphological approaches. The pattern of enzyme activities for acid hydrolases and cytochrome oxidase resemble those previously observed in spontaneous nervous system tumors of man. The activities of 4 acid hydrolases were generally high in the gliomas. This could not be attributed solely to zones of regression or necrosis but was a general characteristic of the neoplasms. The activities were predominantly particulate and most likely lysosomal in localization. In schwannomas a similar increase in hydrolases was found in comparison with normal neural tissues but aryl-sulfatase was not increased. Cytochrome oxidase activities were markedly reduced in all tumors studied. The proportionate reduction with respect to normal brain was comparable to that noted in man. No differences were found with respect to fairly well differentiated gliomas.

    Notes: Summary Various types of cell motility have been observed and analyzed with techniques of increasing sensitivity and sophistication. Photokymography, cinemicrography and laser-Doppler spectroscopy have all made important contributions to our knowledge of cytoplasmic streaming and cell movement. Now videomicroscopy is finding applications in recording and analyzing two different kinds of images. Video intensification microscopy by image intensifiers and silicon intensified target (SIT) video cameras is used to intensify images too dim to be viewed by eye or photographed. On the other hand, video enhanced microscopy uses a less sensitive chalnicon or other vidicon camera with adjustable amplification and offset to enhance the contrast and improve the resolution of microscopes that employ instrumental compensators. Both of these videotechniques have greatly extended the usefulness of the optical microscope: image intensification to brighten dim images and video enhancement to improve the contrast and resolution so that even “submicroscopic” structures and events can be recorded. These video techniques can both be further extended by a frame memory, with which images can be further enhanced by computer processing. Still to be developed, however, are appropriate methods for automatic tracking of particle motions.

    Notes: Summary A new species of oligotrophie, methionine-or cysteine-requiring yeast was isolated from ripening fruits of the AmazonianParahancornia amapa tree. This species resemblesCandida sorboxylosa and species ofIssatchenkia but is nonfermentative and forms abundant pseudomycelia. The new species was isolated only fromP. amapa fruits, and not from other fruits or the drosophilid vectors of the yeast community of the deteriorating fruit. The taxon is regarded as indigenous to the amapa fruit or inoculated by vectors other thanDrosophila before ripening. A description of the new speciesCandida amapae is given.
