Notes: The structure of polyethylenimine in aqueous and ethanolic solutions was investigated by measuring the fluorescence polarization of dansyl conjugates. In aqueous solutions, all polyethylenimines, whatever their molecular weight, are associated into large aggregates containing rotating units having rotary relaxation times corresponding to spherical particles of molecular weight about 3-6 × 103. The interaction of polyethylenimine with very dilute solutions of linear high polymers has been investigated by fluorescence polarization measurements and by the measurement of turbulent drag. Addition of polyethylenimine causes the solutions of anionic polymers to lose their capability of reducing turbulent drag. The results are discussed in relation to the proposed structure of the anionic-cationic complexes formed in the mixtures.

Notes: A series of 17 cysteine, N-acetyl cysteine, glutathione, and N-trifluoroacetyl glutathione conjugates have been prepared, and their thermospray (TSP) spectra have been recorded in the positive and negative ion modes. The compounds undergo extensive fragmentation, which primarily occurs at the carbon-sulfur bonds. For most of the compounds, positive ion TSP is more sensitive than negative ion thermospray. Probably due to the thermal lability of these adducts, the quality of the spectra obtained are dependent on source conditions, requiring fine control of the vaporization/desolvation process.

Notes: Metabolism of 4,4′-thio-bis-(2-t-butyl-5-methylphenol)(TBBC) in rats resulted in the formation of a glucuronide conjugate of TBBC. This conjugate was identified by a combination of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry and a tandem mass spectrometric method employing a fast particle ionization technique. A comparison of mass spectral data from the in-vivo metabolite of TBBC and an enzymically synthesized glucuronide conjugate of TBBC showed the metabolite to be the monoglucuronide.

Notes: A series of Senecio alkaloid and alkaloid N-oxide standards has been analyzed using positive and negative ion thermospray liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) with an ammonium acetate-containing mobile phase. On-line separations of pyrrolizidine alkaloids from extracts of Senecio jacobaea (tansy ragwort) and Senecio vulgaris (common groundsel) were done using an ammonium hydroxide-containing mobile phase. All of the alkaloids known to be present in the extracts were detected by ammonium hydroxide thermospray LC/MS, as well as many other components which may be as-yet-unidentified alkaloids.

Notes: The utility of combined open-tubular liquid chromatography/negative ion chemical ionization (NCI) mass spectrometry for the separation and analysis of trifluralin, a commonly used pre-emergence herbicide, and seven of its metabolites has been demonstrated. The NCI mass spectra for these compounds are reported. Some of the NCI mass spectra were obtained from as little as 50 pg of analyte.

Notes: The various types of drag-reducing systems and their hydrodynamic shear degradation are briefly reviewed and some new measurements reported. The new measurements include the determination of the efficiency of drag reduction by a variety of systems ranging from fully flexible polymers, more rigid polymers, and asbestos fibers. These results, together with those of previous workers using fractionated polymers, show a good correlation between critical concentration and particle length. The results suggest that at the highest wall shear stress, the parameter governing the efficiency is the contour length of the particle, irrespective of its structure, stiffness, or diameter. At lower wall shear stresses, the shorter flexible molecules are less efficient, but the short rigid ones and the long flexible ones maintain their efficiency. The shear degradation of the systems was measured by repeated passages of the solution through the measuring apparatus at both high and low wall shear stresses. Drag reduction measured at low wall shear stresses is an extremely sensitive indicator of shear degradation of flexible polymers.

Notes: The following indole compounds have been unequivocally identified and semi-quantitated in culture supernatants of Rhizobium strains by gas chromatography mass spectrometry: indole-3-aldehyde, trytophol, indole-3-carboxylic acid, indole-3-glycollc acid, indole-3-actic acid, indole-3-glyoxylic acid, N-acethyl-L-tryptophan and indole-3-pyruvic acid, as well as indole-3-acetic acid. The strains included a number of chosen Rhizobium mutants defective in various stages of nodule formation, and the biological implications of the findings are discussed. Two alternative approaches to sample purification were taken, one based primarily on solvent partitioning and the other on high-performance liquid chromatography. The advantages of each method are discussed. Gas chromatographic retention times and mass spectra are given for the TMS derivatives of 17 authentic indole standards.
