Notes: The EI mass spectra of six n-butylboronate ester derivatives of the major metabolite of prostaglandins F1α and F2α (PGF-M) are presented and discussed. Proposed ion assignments and fragmentation pathways are based on substituent shifts, on data from a deuterium-labeled methoxime derivative and on the analysis of collision-induced dissociation spectra of selected ions. Fragment ions suitable for identification and quantification of PGF-M in a biological matrix and diagnostically valuable ions for structure recognition are proposed.

Notes: Low resolution mass spectra and high resolution data for selected important peaks are presented and discussed for the following compounds: [(5-acetyl-2-furyl)-(2′-furyl)]methane (I), [(5-acetyl-2-furyl)-(5′-methyl-2′-furyl)]methane (II), [(5-formyl-2-furyl)-(2′-furyl)]methane (III) and [(5-formyl-2-furyl)-(5′-methyl-2′-furyl)]methane (IV). The fragmentation of II has been clarified by examining the mass spectrum of its d3-acetyl analog; the fragmentation of III and IV by examining the spectra of their carbonyl 13C-labeled analogs.

Notes: Collisionally activated decomposition (CAD) mass spectra of the [M - C6F5CH2⋅]- ions of 1-methyl cster-11-pentafluorobenzyl ester-9,12,15-tris(trimethylsilyl) and 9,12,15-tris(ethyldimethylsilyl) ether derivatives of 11-dehydrothromboxane B2 are presented and discussed. The spectra are interpreted with the aid of those of a corresponding 3,3,4,4-tetradeutero compound and of an analogous derivative of 11-dehydrothromboxane B3. Proposed fragmentation pathways are based on internal consistency of data from all four compounds. The migration of a trimethylsilyl or an ethyldimethylsilyl group is the salient feature of all the CAD spectra.

Notes: A new procedure for the simultaneous measurement of prostaglandins E2 and F2α in human urine is described. Quantification was achieved by gas chromatography mass spectrometry with selected ion monitoring and deuterium labeled internal standards. The levels of measured prostaglandins ranged from 25 pg ml-1 of urine (PGE2) to 2500 pg ml-1 (PGF2α). The interassay coefficient of variation, determined by replicate analysis of four identical samples, was 1.9% for PGE2 and 0.8% for PGF2α. The procedure takes a fraction of the time needed with published methods and can be conducted with as little as one-tenth of the daily urinary output.
