Notes: Abstract Monitoring of the near-nucleus activity of C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) began in Teide Observatory in August 1995. During 1996 the comet was observed on 72 nights between March 26 and November 13. A permanent fan structure was observed towards the north during the whole period of observation. The position angle of the axis of this fan was measured and its variations with time were used to determine the position of the North Pole of the cometary nucleus.

Notes: Summary Acute leukemia, hepatocellular carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma have been reported in patients with Fanconi's anemia. We report on a 31-year-old woman who developed squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus and hepatocellular carcinoma. Jaundice and hepatic tumor developed in 1981, after she had received oxymetholone for 10 years. Liver biopsy revealed peliosis hepatis. Androgenic therapy was stopped and the jaundice resolved. However, the hepatic tumor was observed to be unchanged. The patient died of disseminated squamous cell carcinoma, but no metastatic lesions from hepatocellular carcinoma were detected in the autopsy. The association of Fanconi's anemia and squamous cell carcinoma is reviewed, and the malignant potential of androgen-related hepatic tumors is discussed.

Notes: In this work we report the emulsion copolymerization of styrene and acrylic acid using a cationic (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide or CTAB) or an anionic (sodium dodecylsulfate or SDS) emulsifier. Latexes were stable and monodisperse with spherical particles of ∼100 nm for the CTAB latex and of ∼70 nm for the SDS latex. However, a random copolymer was produced with CTAB whereas a “blocky” copolymer was obtained with SDS. Here we propose a mechanism to explain these structural differences in terms of the relative reactivities of styrene and acrylic acid and of their initial location and distribution in the SDS and CTAB emulsions.

Notes: A mathematical model for light-limited growth of a continuous microalgal culture is proposed. Average light intensity inside the photobioreactor was calculated, taking light attenuation by algae into account. The biomass absorption coefficient was determined by means of two new parameters, the pigment-free biomass, YB, and the total pigment absorption, Yp (absorption coefficient normalized to total pigment content). The model reproduced the steady states reached and the dynamic behaviour of the system when the dilution rate was changed.

Notes: The topographic mode of imaging has been used to study the systems Pd on graphite, Pt on graphite and Pt on alumina. It is shown that this method can provide information on the shape of the particles, on the morphology of the substrates (including steps on their surfaces) and on the distribution of the particles with respect to substrate features. It is also shown that with this method particles can be detected which, due to their smallness and to the presence of substrate noise, are otherwise invisible.
