Notes: A high speed computer interface and closed-loop feedback control system has been integrated into an existing, mechanical lever-arm, constant load, high temperature creep testing machine to shed load as a function of decreasing cross-sectional area such that a state of constant stress can be obtained throughout the test duration. This allows a computer interface and the custom designed mechanical load shedding apparatus to precisely control the applied stress in response to any changes in the specimen's measured resistance to deformation during a material evaluation test. A background analysis of typical mechanical creep machines and the design concepts and technical innovations related to the novel apparatus presented in this work will be discussed in detail. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Two adult patients of leprosy, one woman and one man, presented with a clinical picture simulating sporotrichosis. The skin and regional nerve trunk was affected in one, and in the other the disease was confined to the nerve. Both had features of an upgrading reaction following anti-leprosy therapy; this was seen as erosion and scarring of the plaque, and acute onset of abscesses along the easily palpable and thickened nerve that ruptured through the skin. The diagnosis was supported by histopathology. In the light of other infections that give rise to a sporotrichoid pattern of infection it is concluded that leprosy should also be included in this category so that early diagnosis and use of corticosteroids can be implemented quickly to prevent nerve destruction.

Notes: Two-photon absorption cross sections of two dye molecules, doped in thin films of polymethylmethacrylate, are measured by comparing fluorescence intensities induced by single- and two-photon excitations. Ratio of the single- and two-photon absorption cross sections is related to the ratio of the single- and two-photon pumped fluorescence intensities. Using this sensitive and background-free detection technique, dispersion of the nonlinearity is measured over a wavelength range of 700–800 nm. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A novel process for the direct laser writing of thin-film high Tc patterns is demonstrated. The process consists of deposition of a high quality film (308 nm laser ablation from a YBa2Cu3Ox target with a 750 °C substrate temperature and a 150 mTorr O2 ambient), annealing in an inert atmosphere (Ar at 400 °C for 5–20 min) to reduce the oxygen content and depress or eliminate the superconducting transition temperature, and direct-write laser heating (1.06 μm at ≈0.5 kW/cm2 for ≈5 min) in an oxygen atmosphere at ≈590 Torr to selectively regenerate the high Tc material. rf eddy current and four-point resistivity probe results confirm this process for both SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates. Scanning electron micrographs indicate that this is a very mild processing sequence with no observable changes in film morphology.

Notes: Distributed Bragg reflection from integrated polymethylmethacrylate waveguides fabricated on corrugated spin-on-glass substrate is reported. Utilizing third-order Bragg resonance, a maximum reflection of 92% from the grating filter is measured at a wavelength of 423.6 nm. A maximum bandwidth of the Bragg reflection is found to be ∼0.5 nm for a 6 mm long filter. The broad bandwidth and the significant transmission loss (∼90%) away from resonance are believed to be related to the radiation coupling by the grating. It is shown that the radiation loss can be minimized without sacrificing high reflectivity by limiting the waveguide length to 0.5 mm, the saturation length of the Bragg reflector. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background. This is an unusual presentation of lepromatous leprosy (ll) in a young boy, 12 years of age. The study forms part of a large scale immunotherapeutic trial with Mycobacterium w (M.w) antileprosy vaccine. The trial is being conducted in two major hospitals in New Delhi, India. Materials and Methods. This patient presented with three lesions: one on each forearm and the third on the left leg. He was classified initially as borderline tuberculoid leprosy. Slit-skin smears and histopathology from the lesions proved the diagnosis to be lepromatous leprosy with a bacterial index (bi) 6+. The initial lepromin test was negative. The patient was treated with chemo-immunotherapy (standard multidrug therapy and immunotherapy with Mycobacterium w vaccine). Results. Investigations after 1 year (15 months) of multidrug therapy and three doses of vaccine, showed a remarkable fall in the bi from 6 to 0 in the lesions, a lepromin positivity of 5 mm, and a histological upgrading from lepromatous leprosy to borderline tuberculoid. Immunologic studies at 15 months revealed a good LTT response and high levels of cytokines, specifically IL-2 and IFN-γ. Conclusions. This report presents an LL patient with disease limited to a few sites. It stresses the importance of slit-smear and biopsy in all patients of leprosy, and it highlights the upgrading observed on administration of chemo-immunotherapy.

Notes: Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss is widely grown as an oilseed crop in the Indian subcontinent. White rust disease caused by Albugo candida (Pers.) Kuntze is a serious disease of this crop causing considerable yield loss every year. The present study was undertaken to identify molecular markers for the locus controlling white rust resistance in a mustard accession, BEC-144, using a set of 94 recombinant inbred lines (RILs). The screening of individual RILs using an isolate highly virulent on the popular Indian cultivar ‘Varuna’ revealed the presence of a major locus for rust resistance in BEC-144. Based on screening of 186 decamer primers employing bulked segregant analysis (BSA), 11 random amplified polymorphic DNA markers were identified, which distinguished the parental lines and the bulks. Five of these markers showed linkage with the rust resistance locus. Two markers, OPN0l000 and OPB061000, were linked in coupling and repulsion phases at 9.9 cM and 5.5 cM, respectively, on either side of the locus. The presence of only two double recombinants in a population of 94 RILs suggested that the simultaneous use of both markers would ensure efficient transfer of the target gene in mustard breeding programmes.
