Summary Introduction: Children with ”nursing bottle syndrome” and long standing teeth destructions and no treatment so far were examined for accompanying pathological changes in the bacterial flora of the mouth and alterations due to chronic inflammation of the oral mucosa and the alveolar jawbone. Methods: In the years between 1993 and 1996, out of 200 annual patients with ”nurse bottle syndrome” four were selected because of their extreme condition. Besides caries diagnosis and clinical documentation, microbiological and histopathological examinations were carried out. Results: Diagnosis and therapy of cases of giant cell reparative granuloma, oral candida infection, actinomycotic bone sequestration and displaced eruption of permanent maxillary incisors due to the persistance of suppurated temporary teeth are presented. Conclusions: These examples of serious complications of the ”nursing bottle syndrome” demonstrate that it is still urgently necessary to inform parents about the disease and its consequences, but mainly its prevention by dental care.

Zusammenfassung Fragestellung: Im Rahmen der Fallsichtungen von Kindern mit über lange Zeiträume unbehandelt gebliebenen Gebißzerstörungen des Nursing-bottle-Syndroms wurde untersucht, inwieweit die bestehenden pathologischen Veränderungen des Keimspektrums der Mundhöhle sowie die chronischen Entzündungszustände der Mundschleimhaut und des alveolären Kieferknochens auch zu problematischen Begleitbefunden führen können. Methode: Aus einer Gesamtzahl von jährlich etwa 200 Nursing-bottle-Syndrom-Patienten im Zeitraum von 1993–1996 wurden 4 Extremfälle ausgewählt und bei diesen neben kariesdiagnostischen Erhebungen und klinischen Verlaufsdokumentationen bedarfsweise auch histopathologische sowie mikrobiologische Untersuchungen durchgeführt. Ergebnisse: Es werden je 1 Patientenfall mit Riesenzellgranulom, Mundsoor, aktinomykotischer Knochensequestrierung und verlagertem Durchbruch bleibender Frontzähne bei Persistenz der im Kieferknochen vereiterten Milchschneidezähne in Diagnostik und Therapie vorgestellt. Schlußfolgerung: Die Fallbeispiele belegen, daß nach wie vor die Notwendigkeit besteht, über pädiatrische und zahnmedizinische Vorsorge zu den Gefahren des Nursing-bottle-Syndroms und seinen Folgen zu informieren.
