Notes: Summary 23 patients with proven pseudolupus-syndrome were observed over a period of five years; titers of specific antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA) were tested in a follow-up study after the last intake of Venopyronum-Dragees (VPD), a drug combination of plant glycosides, horse-chestnut extracts and phenopyrazone. Cellular immune reactions against the eliciting drug, depended on the date of the acute phase and were examined in two patients after reexposure. High titers in the acute phase decreased rapidly in most of the cases within the first six months. After reexposure with VPD, AMA rose within three days up to the five fold compared with the initial titer. Only the analgetic component of VPD, phenopyrazone, was able to induce a significant increase of AMA-titer after reexposure. A specific cellular sensitivity to this substance could be demonstrated by lymphocyte stimulation in the presence of a phenopyrazone containing drug preparation. There was no chronic course of the disease; clinical exazerbation could be observed only after new intake of the drug. The analysis of drug history shows, that other pyrazolone containing drugs may also be able to induce a pseudolupus-syndrome.

Notes: Summary A follow-up examination was performed on 41 patients who had had a traumatic rupture of the spleen (autologous replantation,n = 20; splenectomy,n = 21). In all replantation cases spleen tissue was demonstrated scintigraphically. After traumatic ruptures of the spleen, the incidence of splenosis was very high. There was good clearance function in all replantation and splenosis cases. The lack of the spleen's storage function is responsible for elevated B-lymphocyte and T-suppressor-cell levels in peripheral blood. In severe traumatic ruptures, the replantation of splenic tissue is an alternative procedure for preserving the spleen.

Notes: We consider a domain Ω in ∝n of the form Ω = ∝l × Ω′ with bounded Ω′ ⊂ ∝n-l. In Ω we study the Dirichlet initial and boundary value problem for the equation ∂t2 u + [(- ∂12 -… - ∂l2)m + (- ∂l+12 -… - ∂n2)m]u = fe-iωt. We show that resonances can occur if 2m ≥ l. In particular, the amplitude of u may increase like tα (α rational, 0〈α〈1) or like in t as t∞∞. Furthermore, we prove that the limiting amplitude principle holds in the remaining cases.

Notes: In a joint paper with K. Morgenröther [9] we have studied the propagation of scalar waves in domains of the type Ω = Ωo-B̄ with Ωo:=∝2 × (0, 1), where B is a smooth bounded domain with B̄ ⊏ Ωo. In particular, we have shown that the solution of Neumann's initial and boundary value problem for the wave equation with time-independent right-hand side ƒ increases with a logarithmic rate as t → ∞ if the integral over ƒ does not vanish. The main purpose of the present paper is to extend this result to arbitrary smooth local perturbations of Ωo.

Notes: We study the propagation of linear waves, generated by a compactly supported time-harmonic force distribution, in a semi-infinite string under the assumption that the material properties depend p-period-ically on the space variable outside a sufficiently large interval [0, a]. The spectrum of the self-adjoint extension A of the spatial part of the differential operator consists of a finite or countable number of bands and a (possibly empty) discrete set of eigenvalues located in the gaps of the continuous spectrum. We show that resonances of order t or t½, respectively, occur if either ω2 is an eigenvalue of A or (i) ω2 is a boundary point of the continuous spectrum of A and (ii) the corresponding time-independent homogeneous problem has a non-trivial solution which is p-periodic or p-semiperiodic for x 〉 a (‘standing wave’).

Notes: In this paper we consider the reflection of acoustic waves at an unbounded surface which coincides with a plane outside a sufficiently large sphere. We prove uniqueness and existence theorems for the corresponding boundary value problems for the reduced wave equation with Dirichlet and Neumann data by employing integral equation methods.

Notes: In the first part of this paper we consider generalised solutions of the Poisson equation Δ U = F in open subsets of Rn(n ≥ 3) with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary data. We prove existence and uniqueness theorems, not only for the corresponding interior and exterior problems, but also for domains with boundaries extending to infinity. In the second part we discuss generalised harmonic fields in open subsets of R3 with vanishing Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition.

Notes: We study initial and boundary value problems for the wave equation and the heat equation with a time-independent right-hand term f in two space dimensions in the exterior of a closed curve C. In the case of Neumann's boundary condition ∂u/∂n = 0 on C, the solutions increase with a logarithmic rate as t → ∞ if ∫ fdx ≠ 0. In contrast to this, the solutions of the corresponding Dirichlet problems converge to the solution of the related static problem as t → ∞. In the case of the wave equation, these results have already been obtained by L: A. Muravei under the additional assumption that the curvature of C is positive, by using high frequency estimates for the reduced wave equation Δ U + ϰ2 U = 0. The analysis presented here is based on different methods, which can be applied to arbitrary smooth curves.

Notes: Let Ω be a local perturbation of the n-dimensional domain Ω0 = Ropf;n - 1 × (0, π). In a previous paper8 we have introduced the notion of an admissible standing wave. We shall prove that the principle of limiting absorption holds for the Dirichlet problem of the reduced wave equation in Ω at ω ≥ 0 if Ω does not allow admissible standing waves with frequency ω. From Reference 8, this condition is satisfied for every ω ≥ 0 if Ω ≠ Ω0, and v·x′ ≤ 0 on δΩ, where x′ = (x1,…, xn - 1, 0) and v is the normal unit vector on δΩ pointing into the complement of Ω. In contrast to this, the principle of limiting absorption is violated in the case of the unperturbed domain Ω0 at the frequencies ω = 1,2,… if n ≤ 3. The second part of our investigation, which will appear in a subsequent paper, is devoted to the principle of limit amplitude.

Notes: It has been observed13 that the propagation of acoustic waves in the region Ω0= ∝2 × (0, 1), which are generated by a time-harmonic force density with compact support, leads to logarithmic resonances at the frequencies ω = 1, 2,… As we have shown9 in the case of Dirichlet's boundary condition U = 0 on ∂Ω, the resonance at the smallest frequency ω = 1 is unstable and can be removed by a suitable small perturbation of the region. This paper contains similar instability results for all resonance frequencies ω = 1, 2,… under more restrictive assumptions on the perturbations Ω of Ω0. By using integral equation methods, we prove that absence of admissible standing waves in the sense of Reference 7 implies the validity of the principle of limit amplitude for every frequency ω ≥ 0 in the region Ω =Ω0 -B, where B is a smooth bounded domain with B̄⊂Ω0. In particular, it follows from Reference 7 in the case of Dirichlet's boundary condition that the principle of limit amplitude holds for every frequency ω ≥ 0 if n·x′ ≤ 0 on ∂ B, where x′ = (x1, x2, 0) and n is the normal unit vector pointing into the interior B of ∂ B. In the case of Neumann's boundary condition, the logarithmic resonance at ω = 0 is stable under the perturbations considered in this paper. The asymptotic behaviour of the solution for arbitary local perturbations of Ω0 will be discussed in a subsequent paper.
