Zusammenfassung 1. An 8 gesunden 21–27 Jahre alten Versuchspersonen werden die Wirkungen einer 2wöchigen oralen Verabreichung von Xylit auf die Serumkonzentrationen verschiedener Lipide und von Harnsäure untersucht. Einer maximal 7tägigen Adaptationszeit, in der die Xylitzufuhr von 15 g auf 50 g täglich ohne Nebenwirkungen gesteigert wird, folgt mindestens einwöchige Gabe von 50 g Xylit täglich. 3 Tage nach Absetzen von Xylit findet eine Nachbeobachtung statt. 2. Für die unter Xylit auftretenden Änderungen der Serumkonzentrationen von Triglyceriden, freiem Glycerin, unveresterten Fettsäuren, Alpha- und Beta-Lipoproteinen, Gesamt-Cholesterin, Phosphatiden, Acetacetat und Beta-Hydroxybutyrat läßt sich keine statistische Sicherung erbringen. 3. Im Anstieg der Serumkonzentration von anorganischem Phosphor bis zum 7. Versuchstag, dann gleichbleibender Höhe und langsamer Abnahme nach Absetzen von Xylit kann sich eine Anpassung der Phosphatnachlieferung an erhöhte Phosphatumsätze widerspiegeln. 4. Der Pyruvatspiegel fällt nach initialem Anstieg zunehmend signifikant ab, während der Lactatgehalt des Blutes von Anfang an abnimmt. Möglicherweise adaptieren sich die Umsatzverhältnisse von Intermediärprodukten bei längerfristiger oraler Zufuhr von Xylit so sehr, daß sich schließlich ein völlig „normales Muster“ einstellt. 5. Bei Diskussion eines unveränderten Harnsäurespiegels im Serum während 2wöchiger oraler Aufnahme von Xylit muß die Tatsache beachtet werden, daß hier eine intakte renale Ausscheidung eine Rolle spielt und ein Kohlenhydrataustausch, jedoch keine absolute Xylit-Wirkung eingetreten ist.

Summary 1. The effects of an oral application of xylitol over two weeks to 8 normal subjects aged 21 to 27 years have been studied with respect to fat and uric acid metabolism. There was an initial adaptation period of up to 7 days during which time the daily xylitol intake was increased from 15 g to 50 g without side effects. Observations were continued for 3 days after the cessation of xylitol administration. 2. There was no statistically significant change in the serum concentrations of triglycerides, nonesterified fatty acids, free glycerol, alpha-lipoproteins, beta-lipoproteins, total cholesterol, phosphatides, aceto-acetate or beta-hydroxy-butyrate during xylitol administration. 3. The serum inorganic phosphate concentration rose until the 7th day of the test period, then remained steady and slowly decreased after stopping the intake of xylitol. This may reflect an adaptation of phosphate supply to increased phosphate turnover. 4. After an initial rise there was a significant decline in serum pyruvate levels, whereas lactate levels declined from the beginning. Possibly there was an adaptation of turnover of intermediary products during long-term oral intake of xylitol until finally a completely “normal pattern” appears. 5. In considering the unchanged serum uric acid level during medium-term oral xylitol intake, it must be realised that normal renal excretion may have played a part and that the carbohydrate substituted with xylitol may not have been precisely defined.
