    Notes: Abstract We report a new laparoscopic approach to the resection of the lower rectum which has been successfully used in the treatment of a patient with a small rectal carcinoid tumor. Under general anesthesia a pneumo-peritoneum was established with CO2 gas insufflation and the rectum was mobilized from the sacrum including division of the lateral ligaments under the direct view of the laparoscope. The bowel was divided between the sigmoid colon and the rectum using an endoscopic linear stapler, and the rectum was everted through the anal canal. The lower rectum was transected extracorporeally using a linear stapler and the rectal stump was then returned to the anatomical position. An anvil of a circular stapling device into the oral colon stump through a small skin incision on the left lower abdomen was introduced and the shaft of the device through the rectal stump via anus was inserted. The device was then re-approximated under laparoscopic view and fired. Our procedure described here is applicable to the lower rectal lesion as a minimally invasive, safe, and useful therapeutic tool.

    Notes: Based on the Mueller matrix approach, we have successfully designed and constructed a highly sensitive instrument for measuring optical birefringence (LB) by using a polarization modulation method and phase-sensitive technique. Our instrument can measure the retardation of a sample up to 10-2 radian. Using this instrument, we have measured the residual birefringence of thermosetting resins, CR-39 resin and epoxy resin, for opticaldisk substrates. CR-39 resin results are summarized as follows: (1) Annealing is very effective in reducing LB of samples; (2) samples prepared from raw material 2 (monomer purity, 96%, oligomer, 4%) have smaller LB than those from raw material 1 (monomer purity, 99.9%); and (3) annealed samples prepared from 2 satisfy the requirement on LB to be used as optical-disk substrates. For epoxy resin: (1) “Second curing” largely reduces LB of samples; (2) “slow cooling” is more effective in reducing LB of samples than “fast cooling;” (3) after the second curing, cutting does not induce any residual stress birefringence in samples; and (4) slow-cooled samples have good optical properties to be used as optical disk substrates.

    Description / Table of Contents: Der Dichroismus im ultravioletten, sichtbaren und infraroten Wellenbereich und die Doppelbrechung einer Reihe von verstreckten Polyvinylchloridproben, die Polyenstrukturen enthalten und durch chemische Halogenwasserstoffabspaltung dargestellt worden waren, wurden untersucht. Es wird eine Theorie über die Beziehungen des Dichroismus und der Doppelbrechung des Segments eines polymeren Moleküls zu der Länge (und Steifheit) dieses Segments entwickelt. Die Werte für die Hauptabsorptionsstellen und für die Polarisierbarkeit der Polyensegmente, die für die Theorie erforderlich sind, wurden berechnet. Die Theorie wird angewendet, um diese optischen Messungen in befriedigender Weise untereinander in Beziehung zu setzen und einen Weg zur experimentellen Bestimmung der Orientierung des Polyvinylchlorids in einem orientierten Film zu erhalten.
    Notes: The ultraviolet, visible and infrared dichroism and birefringence of a series of stretched polyvinyl chloride (PVC) samples containing polyene structures prepared by chemical dehydrohalogenation is studied. A theory is developed relating the dichroism and birefringence of a segment of a polymer molecule to the length (and stiffness) of that segment. Values of the principal absorbances and polarizabilities of the polyene segments which are required for the theory are calculated. The theory is applied to interrclate these optical measurements in a satisfactory manner and to provide a means of experimentally determining the orientation of PVC in an oriented film.

    Notes: This article describes a dynamic model for formation and stability of CO2-hydrate on the interface of liquid CO2(LCO2) and ocean water at large depths. Experimental results indicate that a thin film of hydrate naturally forms on the interfaces between LCO2 and water, and inhibits diffusion between the two phases. Experiments further shows that the flux of CO2 through the hydrate film is dependent of the CO2-concentration in the ambient sea water. The model proposed here explains these phenomena by introducing four major mechanisms; diffusion of water to the LCO2-phase, formation of hydrate in the LCO2-hydrate interface, decay of hydrate in the water-hydrate interface, and diffusion of CO2 through the water phase. The model explains the CO2 flux not by diffusion through the hydrate film, but suggest a mechanism of continuous hydrate formation and decay. The overall effect is a “moving,” pseudo-steady-state hydrate film due to transport of CO2 through the film. The film velocity is dependent of liquid-liquid diffusivity parameters and reaction constant, and lacking experimental values of these parameters, an order-of-magnitude analysis is done by fitting the model to experimentally obtained data for the overall film velocity. The motivation for this work is to elucidate options for CO2 depositions in deep oceans, of which liquid CO2 sequestration is believed to be one of the most feasible. Spreading of CO2 from a liquid CO2-lake and associated lowering of pH in the ecosystem surrounding the lake is of large concern. The work presented here concludes that diffusion of CO2 in the ocean is largely reduced by the hydrate film and suggests that hydrate formation may alleviate some of the environmental concerns regarding deep ocean sequestration of liquid CO2. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
